This is just wrong. You can't have any success if you just assume anything close is gonna be a strike. Pearce did well and got hosed. Even the Mets announcers admitted that the 3-1 pitch was ball four. The overhead cam showed it practically in the other batter's box.

Pearce walked twice in that AB, once on a ball 8 inches outside, the other outside and below the knees.
