You're looking at this all wrong. If we're going to add a player with tremendous upside like Payton, we're going to have to get a third team involved. If we throw in an additional player or two (along with Payton), the following scenario is plausible, IMO.

Orioles get:

Pujols

Kemp

Kershaw

LaRoche

Billingsley

Hu

Ethier

Broxton

Meloan

St. Louis gets:

Fahey

Redman

PTBNL

Los Angels gets:

Payton

Doyne

PTBNL
