The Orioles selected the contract of pitcher Julio DePaula, whose remarkable story includes having pitched in only one previous stint in the big leagues...seven years ago! Looks like he has one option remaining. 40-man roster count is now at 39.

Julio DePaula was DFA'ed and sent outright to Bowie, so we are back to 38 players on the 40-man roster.

Bud Norris was optioned to Bowie (first time in his career), but this was just a procedural move to make space on the 25-man roster.

Miguel Gonzalez was optioned in a procedural move to make room for Steve Clevenger on the 25-man roster until the All-Star break. Gonzalez has an additional option left.

Both Gonzalez and Norris were recalled before the 20 day mark, so their options where not used for 2014.

Norris still has three

Gonzalez still has two

The Orioles selected the contract of Cord Phelps. He has no options left. Since the 40-man roster was already full, Matt Wieters was transferred from the 15-day DL to the 60-day DL to create room.

Miguel Gonzalez was optioned again, he's now been down for more than 20 total days, so an option has been used.

Paul Folkemer spotlights some of the Baltimore Orioles' potential September call-ups that could help the team for the home stretch of the 2014 season. http://www.pressboxonline.com/2014/08/20/looking-ahead-at-possible-orioles-september-call-ups

It's a pretty good writeup. IMO, they won't bring up both Meek and Guilmet. I feel that 16 pitchers is a lot and 17 pitchers won't happen. I do think Webb, whoever gets sent down for Gonzalez, one of meek or Guilmet, and Saunders comes up.

Clevenger, yes.

Berry? If they also bring up Saunders, they'll have to open up 2 spots on the 40. I could see an infielder getting bumped from the island (maybe Phelps).

Interesting read. Who is on the 40 man roster and who isn't shouldn't really matter at this point. If you aren't calling up Meek or Steve Johnson, both of whom are out of options, you might as well DFA them and use their 40 man space. There is also the option of recalling Tim Berry or Dylan Bundy and placing them on the 60 Day DL to create space. It is doubtful Walker or Alvarez are added since they don't have space to play and don't need to be protected this off-season.

Looking ahead at this offseason, Bridwell, Vader, Esposito, Wright, Wilson, and Blackmar, among others, are eligible for the Rule 5 draft for the first time. Hobgood is eligible for a second time. And Oliver Drake will be eligible and/or a minor league free agent. Wright and Wilson are most likely added while the rest are left exposed.

Zach Davies, Brandon Kline, and Christian Walker do not have to be added until after 2015 for protection.
