I'm actually encouraged by Jimenez' last 2 starts, particularly as compared to his first 3, which were awful.

In each outing of those last 2 outings, he threw 5 consecutive shutout innings before faltering (in the most recent start, he threw 5 shutout innings from the 2nd through the 6th after having given up 2 runs in the 1st, before faltering in the 7th.)

Whether you like Ubaldo or not, liked the signing or not, you can't deny that was as great a result as you could have asked for, from any pitcher really, but especially from Ubaldo after the pen got gassed yesterday playing two. Fantastic start, and definitely helps restore some confidence.

Helps the pen so much. Love it.

No love for my Buck reference before the game tonight? Man....

He was a different guy out there tonight. In and out and the change of speeds with the splitter/CH was impressive. And the FB at 93 with movement. All pitches working from what I saw. Tough to beat when he's on like that.

Can we get him to throw like that against some division rivals? And the April crap has got to stop. I don't want to see four to five bad starts for the next three years at the start of the year.

And he was just getting loose when he got to 100 pitches. Well....

I was driving to North Carolina, but I heard that Jimenez had a pretty good game last night.

He was at 56 pitches after two innings, and I was afraid he wouldn't reach the 5th. Then he threw only 24 over the next two. A miracle double play got him out of a bases loaded jam in the 5th, and he had pretty much nothing in the 6th. You can take games like this once in a while if he throws in a few more 7-inning shutout efforts.

Well let's be fair to Jimenez. The strike zone was all over the place last night. Wieters was called out on strikes on a ball that was in the batters box and Jimenez was getting no calls on the corners all night. There were a couple of ABs that should have been strikeouts and not a walk because of bad Umping. In the 5th a dying bloop in the infield hit by Jennings didn't help. But Jimenez got out of a jam. That's what you want your pitchers to do. I thought Jimenez could finish out the 6th. Double play was in order still.

Agreed. That strike zone was a disgrace. Price got pretty much every call on the outside corner...especially one against Wieters that was like a foot off the plate. Jimenez was getting squeezed. Mostly on his breaking ball low in the zone.

    • Awesome research, thanks. I was a fan in 1974 but had forgotten that string of five shutouts.  This last two weeks of rotation excellence (and your list) is giving me flashbacks to the summer of love (1967), when I started to make game logs to savor the strings of shutouts and low-hit gems by Oriole starters. Looking back now at the game logs kept by Baseball-Reference (manually, without your sorting skills!), it's hard to identify exactly which streak so impressed my teenage fan-meter, or even which year. Certainly 1968 was all about low scoring league-wide.  Maybe it was the stretch 22-27 May 1967 featuring Phoebus, Bertaina, Barber, McNally, and Phoebus again (good old 4-man rotation!), including three scoreless outings. Or Hardin and Brabender joining Phoebus, McNally and Palmer from 15 to 20 September, 1967. What about 1969, with Cuellar, Lopez and Leonhard joining the previous cast of McNally, Phoebus, and Hardin, twirling 10 starts (13-22 June) while allowing only 12 runs.  Anyway, it feels rather historic to see this run of high-end pitching from an Orioles rotation. Here's a chart to recap the numbers on this streak in progress... Date Starter IP H ER ERA (14 G) totals: 81.67 59 19 2.09 21-Apr Irvin 6.2 4 0   22-Apr Suarez 5.2 4 0   23-Apr Rodriguez 4.1 11 7   24-Apr Kremer 5.1 3 2   26-Apr Burnes 6 3 1   27-Apr Irvin 7 4 0   28-Apr Suarez 4 7 4   29-Apr Rodriguez 5.2 5 0   30-Apr Kremer 7 4 2   1-May Burnes 6 4 2   2-May Bradish 4.2 4 1   3-May Irvin 6.1 2 0   4-May Means 7 3 0   5-May Kremer 6 1 0
    • Somehow feels typical of Orioles to play up to the competition, and get burned by the pretenders... same with individual starting pitchers.
    • It was very obvious ...he would also take a look at his hand frequently. On Saturday, watching a clip in the dugout after one of the HR's, Kremer went to give a high five, pulled back and took a look at his hand. I thought it strange, and I thought something was off. He always appeared to be one of the more enthusiastic celebrators. It would seem the coaches would notice and probably did, but thought nothing of it. Certainly didn't affect his game.
    • Umpire really tried to screw us on Saturday.
    • I heard someone call it The Great American Smallpark.
    • I just looked thru their record a while ago.  Series against the Nats (2), White Sox, Marlins, Cardinals, Rockies and Angels makes their record of 1 win better than the O's way less impressive.  Their schedule coming up must be hell.
