Well let's be fair to Jimenez. The strike zone was all over the place last night. Wieters was called out on strikes on a ball that was in the batters box and Jimenez was getting no calls on the corners all night. There were a couple of ABs that should have been strikeouts and not a walk because of bad Umping. In the 5th a dying bloop in the infield hit by Jennings didn't help. But Jimenez got out of a jam. That's what you want your pitchers to do. I thought Jimenez could finish out the 6th. Double play was in order still.

Overcome all that with only one run given up.

And he didn't have his best stuff. Said so himself. But he had enough good stuff to get it done. Gutty performance.

May god have mercy on your soul, Ubaldo. Because the Tigers lineup will not.

I saw on MLB network that:

1- His results are erratic vs the Tigers (shocking!) with little middle ground between excellent and horrendous

2- He doesn't pitch well at all at Comerica Park

Been saying since his struggles that he'll come around. Complicated mechanical pitcher who started spring training late with new catchers, new pitching coach, new organization who is known to struggle in April.

Good to see Ubaldo doing well. We need him.

It seems like people are hoping Ubaldo fails in this thread.

For the record, I wanted him before we signed him, was ok with terms, and am still ok with the signing.

Great start so far tonight.

I want to see all of the over reaction guys be men and come here and eat their crow!

From April 26:

I'm going to be contrarian here. I think Ubaldo is looking a little better every time out. Lack of velocity? Pitch f/x says he topped out at 95.4 and hit 94 multiple times. http://www.brooksbaseball.net/pfxVB/pfx.php?s_type=3&sp_type=1&year=2014&month=4&day=25&batterX=&pitchSel=434622&game=gid_2014_04_25_kcamlb_balmlb_1/&prevGame=gid_2014_04_25_kcamlb_balmlb_1/&prevDate=425

I think his start seemed worse than it was because he had a rough first inning, something that has happened a lot this year.

Overall, I wasn't completely satisfied, but I think Ubaldo is headed in the right direction and will be an asset as the season progresses.

Any questions? What a great outing by Ubaldo tonight. All the posters who judged him on his first 3-4 starts look pretty foolish now.

Jimenez is maddening to watch at times but I can't imagine anyone who doesn't enjoy watching a game like this. It makes me pine for the days when managers didn't keep track of pitches. He might have had a chance to finish a game like this in the ol' days.

    • Awesome research, thanks. I was a fan in 1974 but had forgotten that string of five shutouts.  This last two weeks of rotation excellence (and your list) is giving me flashbacks to the summer of love (1967), when I started to make game logs to savor the strings of shutouts and low-hit gems by Oriole starters. Looking back now at the game logs kept by Baseball-Reference (manually, without your sorting skills!), it's hard to identify exactly which streak so impressed my teenage fan-meter, or even which year. Certainly 1968 was all about low scoring league-wide.  Maybe it was the stretch 22-27 May 1967 featuring Phoebus, Bertaina, Barber, McNally, and Phoebus again (good old 4-man rotation!), including three scoreless outings. Or Hardin and Brabender joining Phoebus, McNally and Palmer from 15 to 20 September, 1967. What about 1969, with Cuellar, Lopez and Leonhard joining the previous cast of McNally, Phoebus, and Hardin, twirling 10 starts (13-22 June) while allowing only 12 runs.  Anyway, it feels rather historic to see this run of high-end pitching from an Orioles rotation. Here's a chart to recap the numbers on this streak in progress... Date Starter IP H ER ERA (14 G) totals: 81.67 59 19 2.09 21-Apr Irvin 6.2 4 0   22-Apr Suarez 5.2 4 0   23-Apr Rodriguez 4.1 11 7   24-Apr Kremer 5.1 3 2   26-Apr Burnes 6 3 1   27-Apr Irvin 7 4 0   28-Apr Suarez 4 7 4   29-Apr Rodriguez 5.2 5 0   30-Apr Kremer 7 4 2   1-May Burnes 6 4 2   2-May Bradish 4.2 4 1   3-May Irvin 6.1 2 0   4-May Means 7 3 0   5-May Kremer 6 1 0
    • Somehow feels typical of Orioles to play up to the competition, and get burned by the pretenders... same with individual starting pitchers.
    • It was very obvious ...he would also take a look at his hand frequently. On Saturday, watching a clip in the dugout after one of the HR's, Kremer went to give a high five, pulled back and took a look at his hand. I thought it strange, and I thought something was off. He always appeared to be one of the more enthusiastic celebrators. It would seem the coaches would notice and probably did, but thought nothing of it. Certainly didn't affect his game.
    • Umpire really tried to screw us on Saturday.
    • I heard someone call it The Great American Smallpark.
    • I just looked thru their record a while ago.  Series against the Nats (2), White Sox, Marlins, Cardinals, Rockies and Angels makes their record of 1 win better than the O's way less impressive.  Their schedule coming up must be hell.
