I wouldn't be surprised to see Pearce in LF, de Aza in RF, and Davis at 1B next year.

Does anyone really trust Davis in 2015? 1 fail test from really hurting the Orioles in 2015.

That seems like a bit of a stretch, doesn't it? I know Lough started coming around with the bat and he has the ability to make some nice plays but I think you're selling Markakis short here.

Not really. Lough is far superior with the glove and Nick doesn't have any power anymore.

As Drungo said there might be a drop in offense if he plays everyday but most of his value is in his glove.

And an eight digit savings on payroll can go a long way to filling other holes.

Markakis is one of the very few hitters the O's have who can work a count and have a quality AB. Probably only him and Hardy in the current lineup.

That's not worth 12 to 15m a year.

I do not see the Orioles making Nick a QO.

Nick, we don't want to pay you 17.5M for one more year

Nick, here is your 2M and we make you a one year 15.3M QO

Nick, I know this looks bad, but really we are trying to save 200k and would love to pay you 17.3M

Nick, we don't think you'll take it because you know it has nothing to do with 200K and it would be uncomfortable under the circumstances

Nick, sorry about that draft pick we attached to you.... good for us, bad for you, thanks a bunch

If it did happen, I'd take the QO if I was Nick.

It is a business and I have no problem with qualifying offers, however voiding an option at the same money will bring up an issue of integrity with some people/players/unions. It wouldn't look good IMO.

We all know why the QO rule was put into place and this is an abuse of that rule. I believe it will cause changes, if they aren't already coming, to the rule. If I was a player, I'd be inclined not to deal with the Orioles if they operated in this fashion.

I'm not a big fan of the union, but the agreement needs to be changed so you can't offer a QO to a player that you have voided an option year.

For those who don't see the issue, I don't know what to say.

De Aza doesn't have the arm for RF. More likely Pearce in RF and De Aza in LF if both are in the OF. There are lots of variables. Would not be surprised to see Pearce back at 1B and Davis at DH or non-tendered all together. The O's could save money on Markakis and Davis, re-sign Cruz or go with a FA.

They could save money on Davis but I think it would be worth the $11M one year investment to find out what he has before free agency.

Eh, even so, I think counting on similar production from Lough, in the aggregate (i.e., glove offsetting the bat), would be a mistake. He's never played in more than 112 games (this year) or recorded more than 335 ABs (last year) in a single season. I'm assuming he was in the minors for such a long time for a reason, and I'm further assuming that Lough looking lost as a semi-regular early this year wasn't a mirage.

You can make the argument that virtually any level of production from Lough is better than Markakis at $10 million+ per year, but that doesn't mean you're definitely making the team better by going the cheap route. Lough's an undesirable, modest gamble, IMO.

He did have those concussion-like symptoms early... but I worry about long dry spells too.

What about Darren O'Day's option? $4.25 million seemed like a bargain a few months ago, but he got hammered at the end of the season and throughout the playoffs. At the end of the day, he is still not to be trusted against lefties.

Pick it up every day and twice on Sunday.

    • 1:2 is good.  Elite is a player like Arraez who is 1+:1.

    • Was reading Wiggins write up on ESPN. He appears to be more of a home run threat than Koolaid. He had a pick 6 each of the last 2 years.
    • Starting point has changed.  Given the fact he has approx 1/7th of his season in the books at 1.139, to OPS just .780 for the season, he'd have to drop off to under .730 the rest of the way.  That sort of drop off wouldn't be acceptable to me. I'd like him to OPS .800 the rest of the way for roughly .850 for the season.  The more they use him in a platoon role, the better I think that number might be.
    • Can I ask how you timed it vs the DVR?  Did you use a stopwatch or count click with pause/FF, or something else?
    • I can’t fathom why anyone would want a Tanner Scott return. In 10 innings, he is 0-4 with a 1.78 whip. He was maddening before, and now he’s older. But I wonder if the Red Sox would part with Justin Slaten? He’s been pretty outstanding. Yeah, only 8 innings, but we hired Yohan Ramirez, and he’s been a catastrophe in 10. Yes, I know he’s a rule 5, and the Bosox are in the East. And their pitching is pretty thin, too. But they know they aren’t going anywhere in this division, and they might think getting a good return for a Free Rule 5 guy might be worthwhile.
    • This draft unfolded weirdly.  First with the *nix guys getting taken early and then how no defensive players got taken all draft, and then a bunch of teams reaching for OTs.  I'm pretty happy with how the draft unfolded because I think we got a player that I expected to be gone by the teens or early 20s.  I don't know what we're doing with our OL but hopefully we can maybe trade up from 62 to pick someone up.
