What happened to Junior Lake?

wildcard

Recommended Posts

He was optioned to Norfolk and last played on August 21st for the Tides. He is not on the DL. Anyone know what is happening with him?

Trying to figure out with we will see him again with the O's this year.

Could someone please explain to me why DD traded Tommy Hunter, a major league, experienced reliever for a AAA player? Did Hunter pick on DD's dog or something as horrible as that? Or is Junior Lake rated as a "can't miss prospect?"

I believe it was because Jason Garcia is one of our better "Can't Miss" pitching prospects in four more days. And because Mychal Givens is better than Tommy Hunter? And because non of our relievers had options so we needed to get one on the roster that did so we could swap guys out. But maybe it was just to pay for Parra. Who we needed desperately if we were to try to contend. I really don't know. It could be a combination of those things as well.

So trading Tommy Hunter fora minor leaguer was basically a salary dump?

Not to my knowledge. Not at all. Some people are trying to spin that though. I'd say it improved our team and I think you would find no one to say that it did not at this point. I miss Tommy and his good humor though.

That was so 2012, this years thing is hating Junior Lake.

If his father is also named Junior Lake, one would be compelled to ask him "Why to you hate Junior Lake, Jr, Junior?"

I'm guessing that DD liked him because he saw similarities to Paredes and maybe found a late-blooming athletic player. I think he probably should have realized that if a player hasn't succeeded by their age, they could have a good streak, but that streak is going to end up as fool's gold.

This is how good Tommy has been since he left us.

ERA G GS GF CG SHO SV IP H R ER HR BB IBB SO HBP BK WP BF ERA+ FIP WHIP H9 HR9 BB9 SO9 SO/W

But don't allow facts to distort your view of this. You can be permitted to hate on the front office with full venom. Plenty of folks do.

Junior Lake had a good year this season. And Manny Ramirez said he could hit.

Buck likes a bullpen that has players that can be optioned. With Britton, O'Day, Hunter, Brach, Matusz, Garcia and Norris he had none. So they DFA'd Norris. Hunter draw short straw and was traded. Givens being optionable and having the ability to replace Hunter in short relief made the move possible without hurting the team.

Trading FAs before they walk from team is a good move if the farm system has a player to replace them.

You get a potential cost controlled 4th/5th OF'er type for 6 years instead of 2 months of Hunter. Well we called up Wilson and Wright immediately. They both got hurt and Givens has been the man.

Why do you think that matters - if you do think that matters?

PCL has half of the parks that have very high power numbers. And some that are substantially pitchers parks. Obvioulsy he if performs well in the pitchers parks, that is like an Orioles hitter doing well at Norfolk. Extra weight, albiet in a small sample, can be assigned.

    • First, the had a jump in 23’ given how terrible they had been previously, which conditions many fans in the marketplace not to care. They simple weren’t relevant for years. So one very good regular season will not undue years of being bad/irrelevant and treating your customers terribly. Next, I think they missed an opportunity in the offseason by not doing enough by way of big/bold attention grabbing moves. Now I acknowledge that this was most likely due to the ownership flux/transition. I believe they got an attendance/marketplace engagement boost when they changed owners and when they traded for Burnes. However, I believe we would have seen more engagement attendance with say a big Gunnar extension and/or bringing in a big time FA.   IMO this would have created more buzz before the season (say around the time people make season tix decisions - IMO before Christmas is when some people make those bigger purchases). All of this is to say, that it will take time and effort on the organizations part because of how bad of a stain that the Angeloses left. I still have friends and colleagues who refuse to support the Orioles and attend games due to the damage that was done. Rubenstien & co are not going to be able to undo 30 years of awfulness overnight. But IMO it is not enough to simply call it “a new chapter”. They have to make new/different actions to distinguish themselves from who the Orioles were/used to be under the Angelos regime.
    • Just checking in on Gameday, Yankees looking incredibly vulnerable.  Should be the Os out there.  Super lame.  Whichever team wins this series I hope gets knocked out by CLE or DET.
    • If the franchise were better, the fan base would be too.  It’s been a rough 40 years.
    • It also means we don’t have to trade our prospect capital to acquire him
    • Machado just hit a 2 run home run off of Yamamoto.  I hope the Orioles young players are taking notes.
    • Yeah it was priced initially the same as the ALDS games, same as last year. Nobody was rushing to pay those prices. And by the time the tickets reached appropriate levels, by the Orioles lowering their prices or the secondary market coming down in price, fans have like 24 hours to figure out their plans to attend a mid afternoon game. It’s just not worth getting upset about — we still had an awesome crowd and the only thing missing was an offense to ignite it.
