Kimbrel goes to Boston

Keep in mind the top two pieces here are kids who play positions where Boston already has a young, cost-controlled, potential superstar locked-in at the major league level. It'd be like Baltimore having a top 100 3B prospect at Frederick/Bowie. Neither of these players were being depended upon for the Red Sox long term plans. Each was trade bait; just a question of how they'd be used. Still more to deal from, too, but I think Boston goes after a top tier FA starter.

Yea that's true, most of what I read is sox fans didn't feel the overpay should have been on kimbrel because now it takes away from any other potential trades.

I guess it all depends on philosophy. They could go out there and sign price, Cueto or greinke but one thing is for sure; dombrowski is all about short term so probably a 3-5 year run and then Red Sox will probably look like the tigers do now.

Difference is Red Sox already built up their amateur acquisition/development departments. So I wouldn't count on the pipeline drying-up any time soon.

You don't think pressure of that market will make dombrowski trigger happy?

I'm sure if they win another WS, no one will really care but I have seen execs say that a couple more kimbrel type deals and that's how you become the tigers.

I still see it as a 3-5 year run and I'm sure Boston brass sees it the same way. All they care about is the WS. If dombrowski is there more than the 3-5 yr window I would be surprised.

My point is they will continue to bring in amateur players to replenish the pipeline. All of that infrastructure is still in place. No, I don't think Dombro can find enough to trade for to "gut the system." I mean, I guess it's possible. But they just aren't in the same position as Detroit.

Sure, a few more Kimbrel deals would hurt the organization. But there is no indication that will happen. Last thing I read suggest they might part with JBJ to fill a major league hole and they could sign a FA for the OF.

    • Was reading Wiggins write up on ESPN. He appears to be more of a home run threat than Koolaid. He had a pick 6 each of the last 2 years.
    • Starting point has changed.  Given the fact he has approx 1/7th of his season in the books at 1.139, to OPS just .780 for the season, he'd have to drop off to under .730 the rest of the way.  That sort of drop off wouldn't be acceptable to me. I'd like him to OPS .800 the rest of the way for roughly .850 for the season.  The more they use him in a platoon role, the better I think that number might be.
    • Can I ask how you timed it vs the DVR?  Did you use a stopwatch or count click with pause/FF, or something else?
    • I can’t fathom why anyone would want a Tanner Scott return. In 10 innings, he is 0-4 with a 1.78 whip. He was maddening before, and now he’s older. But I wonder if the Red Sox would part with Justin Slaten? He’s been pretty outstanding. Yeah, only 8 innings, but we hired Yohan Ramirez, and he’s been a catastrophe in 10. Yes, I know he’s a rule 5, and the Bosox are in the East. And their pitching is pretty thin, too. But they know they aren’t going anywhere in this division, and they might think getting a good return for a Free Rule 5 guy might be worthwhile.
    • This draft unfolded weirdly.  First with the *nix guys getting taken early and then how no defensive players got taken all draft, and then a bunch of teams reaching for OTs.  I'm pretty happy with how the draft unfolded because I think we got a player that I expected to be gone by the teens or early 20s.  I don't know what we're doing with our OL but hopefully we can maybe trade up from 62 to pick someone up.
    • I have it on dvr and I timed it four times. I got 10.75, 10.80, 10.74, and 10.78.
