So guys' date=' our team, the Browns, were bad AGAIN, how are we going to fix it?

Oh, I know, how bout we get a smart guy who's had a hand in using innovation to build successful sports franchises in here?

No, that's utterly stupid. Baseball nerds don't know about gut checks and hitting WRs coming across the middle! We need to hire a football guy, preferably one who wears 1980s gym teacher shorts and yells a lot!

Yes, brilliant, why didn't I think of that?![/quote']

More like that.

You sir, are brilliant![/quote']

Pretty much. That organization will never get turned around

But Podesta is not really a "baseball guy," he's an "analytics guy." There's no obvious reason why analytics can't be enhanced in football the way they have been in baseball. So long as Podesta's role has to do with developing analytic tools and presenting information, I think his hiring is an outside-the-box move that is just the type of thing a perennial loser like the Browns should try.

I like that approach far better than the circa 2000-2010 Orioles approach, which was "Well, we're going to lose so at least let's not do anything weird that might cause the cool kids to throw dodgeballs at us while we're losing. Better to be completely conventional and anonymous."

Better to lose in spectacular fashion than like everyone else

Podesta played both Baseball and Football at Harvard.

He's far from ignorant about the game.

I mock the Browns no matter what. It's easy to pick the low hanging fruit, but when the fruit is so low you can kick it, I go for it with a steel toed boot

It is my personal belief the Browns were allowed back into the NFL chiefly to serve as a football version of antidepressant medication. Think about it, no matter how bad things get for every other NFL fanbase, at least they can cling on to the fact that........ "at least we are not the Browns".
