If you want to sign Machado long term you have to root against a Davis signing. Unless you believe Baltimore is going to overlap $20+ MM/year for multiple years of Davis with $25-30+ MM/year for multiple years of Machado. I just don't see Baltimore entering 2019 owing ~$50 MM to Davis and Machado.
Manny can restock our system. Chris can't.

Edited the thread title accordingly

This is okay IMO....but now I want them to engage the back up plan which is Upton at 7/147... It's the same money at an extra year and fits a position of need!

I do think this is a big variable that hasn't been extensively discussed. The public narrative was that PA authorized a bunch of extra money for CD. Because he wanted CD. Is that a one-time authorization for Chris specifically? Would he be willing to stretch the payroll pretty significantly this year (with Trumbo and Wieters) and into the future (with a player like Upton) without Chris Davis?

Perhaps so (and I certainly hope so). However, I think there's an assumption on this board, possibly erroneous, that we are authorized a significant bump in payroll and a bit of a free agent spending spree. I'm just concerned the "Chris Davis" may have been the only possible recipient in that "pay to the order of" line.

I understand the concern, but something about Buck and Duke's quotes make me fairly confident in saying Plan B is not Nolan Reimold and Steve Pearce. If the Davis deal is truly dead, I think Upton or Gordon and a pitcher have a high chance of occurring.

If this is Jim Duquette he doesn't know squat. Dan wouldn't be in talks with Upton if that were true!

Isn't Jones buddies with Upton? He should be calling Peter advocating for him!

That is the bite I was referring to. Hard to tell if he knows something or if he is still bitter at Angelos and assumes the worst based on previous experience.

Jim has a bit of experience there.

Jim Duquette was on xm radio saying he truly believes Angelos has no intention of making that money available to anyone but Davis. His take was also that the 150 offer is higher than it should be for Davis. More than generous.

Here's how I'm reading that, the budget either expands with Chris or is more consistent with recent increases without him
