Tim Berry waived and claimed by Miami

I think my gripe is that Berry is one year removed from a pretty solid AA campaign and is 25 this upcoming season. To me, there's a better likelihood you pass through 29 year old middling journeyman reliever with a penchant for slobbering on the ball. And they have a surplus of young arms ready to step right in to soak up innings with options, which makes guys like Roe even less appealing. Berry had at least a little upside if he could recapture his form.

Berry would not have been my first choice to move of thhe 40-man, but perhaps he was not rebounding as fast as they thought from his knee surgery last year? Sometimes there is more to the story.

I wondered if he was dealing with an injury. Even more reason to see if he could rebound. I doubt many teams are interested in Roe and if they are, good luck.

I guess it depends on what is one's definition of "aggressive" (and perhaps a better term in my original post would have been "risk averse"). What I was driving at was raising the question of whether we needed to protect Bridwell or Triggs. I don't recall a lot of chatter about either as prime candidates to be selected, but I could be misremembering. Regardless, we protected both, arguably creating a 40 man pinch that forced our hand with a guy like Berry.

Again, pretty academic at this point, just will be interesting to see if Berry can find himself again this year in the Miami system.

You raise some good points. I was surprised Bridwell and Triggs were added.

Jaso is just a rich man's Clevenger. No position. Not sad over Clevenger. Berry was at the bottom of the depth chart for milb LOOGY's. Either DD saw this as an opportunity to slip him through waivers or an actual move could happen soon.

Yeah, Steve Clevenger is totally capable of putting up a .380 OBP, 136 wRC+ and .839 OPS. He'd just have to improve a little upon his career .228, 64, and .607 marks respectively.

He did say a "rich man's" Clevenger. We just weren't sure how much disparity he was inferring between rich and poor. Looks pretty enormous. I would have liked Jaso as the LH DH. The fact that he can catch in a pinch would have been icing on the cake.

Agreed. It would seem to be in Jaso's best interest to play in the AL. Curious that he chose an NL team.

Maybe he wants to play a position. Probably does. They may have also offered the best contract. Sounds like he's the left side of a platoon at 1B in Pitt.

I would disappointed if the Orioles could have signed him for 2/8 and didn't. He would be a good fit. That would have left us plenty of money for Cespedes/Upton/Gordon. Of course, I want Cespedes but all three are a pipe dream.

Most likely. I'm sure most young professional athletes probably don't think about themselves in a unbiased enough fashion to consider that DHing may keep them healthy since they have had problems with that previously and there is probably a potential for more playing time. Health + playing time would equal a greater opportunity for more dollars later.

It's probably more like "I don't like DHing, and I won't get hurt".

Forgot he had surgery to. Plus there were at least 11 players claimed of waivers the day Berry was. Looks like DD took a calculated risk and tried to sneak him through..

Our 40 man roster is really solid. Every guy we've DFA'd this season has been claimed except Janish and Lough. The decisions are only going to get harder. We're going to need 2 spots. One for Davis or Davis replacement, and another one for a SP. So that's one more spot we're going to have to clear eventually. Maybe that's a trade or we just give the rule 5 guy back.

Lough, Janish, and SJ were all nontendered, so they were exposed to waivers and couldn't be claimed. Cabal and Gamboa cleared waivers and Cabral was retained on a minor league deal.

There is no reason to give up on the rule 5 guy before actually seeing him in action.

One day after the Orioles called up somebody named "Ashur", the Marlins claimed somebody named "Asher."

    • But again, nothing you say here changes anything. This team is going to be built from within. They are not going to try to build any other way…and they are right about that. This doesn’t mean they don’t need to spend but again, those guys will supplement the roster. And don’t think they won’t talk about how they added guys at the deadline for 2025. That they are “like free agent signings”.
    • It was the holder, not the kicker.  Jackson may not be perfect, but he's far from the problem this year. He's got a fumbling issue that may at some point cost this team a game or two, but there is no doubt he's playing some good football right now.
    • Yeah I'm surprised that Cleveland has been this bad. They were good last season.
    • Gunnar also signed a one year contract.
    • The when is really two questions.  One is when do the O's stop being handicapped by the risk-averse mindset that's governed their behavior since 2018, and the second is when does a 74 year-old billionaire tire of being told he has to wait a little longer because Jackson Holliday needs to further refine his new toe-tap?  Oh, and we also need to nail down a position for Coby Mayo, and so on.  No question?  I think the questions are numerous and many of them pretty important, and because they're so important, I think we'll start seeing a change in approach beginning this offseason.  I certainly hope so. Nothing I've said disputes the need for internal development or diminishes the role our current core of young players - some of whom haven't exactly made a seamless transition - will need to play for sustained success.  Nor is it a call for stupid FA spending.  It very much is an argument that time needs to be thought of differently now that two very successful regular seasons are behind the O's and the huge impediment of Angelos ownership is no longer a factor.
    • If he wants to join Hyde’s staff in some capacity, I’d be fine with that. Or are you actually talking about him being on the team as a player?
    • So why would you have sought payment if you were owner as you previously stated?  Since you are not known for being litigious and all? Also as I am sure you’re already aware the media exclusivity rights in Vegas are already shared by 6 major league teams. Which clearly was not the situation in DC as the territory was expressly the territory of the Baltimore Orioles.
