Chris Tillman

(7-1)

3.33 (1.18/.215)

66/29 (9HR)

QS: 6

</b></b>

After a strong start to the season, Tillman has allowed nine runs and six home runs over the last two starts and has struggled more with his control than he has already this season. His velocity has also been down again, so hopefully, a bounceback is on the horizon. Tillman has not done well against the Royals at all in seven starts, but he is still undefeated in eight home starts this season.

Edinson Volquez

(5-5)

4.03 (1.41/.266)

59/27 (8HR)

QS: 6

Volquez finished April with a solid 3.34 ERA, but followed that up with a 4.06 in May and hasn't got off to a good start in June allowing five runs in 6.1 innings against Cleveland. Volquez allowed three runs or less in four of six May starts, so he hasn't been terrible by any stretch. He has not allowed more than three runs in back to back starts all season and is in danger of doing that in this start if he doesn't pitch well.

Splits & Sits

162 vs. left: .241/.311/.321, 4HR

Career vs Baltimore (4 starts)

(0-2) 5.40 (1.75/.296), 3HR, 11B in 20 IP

vs. Batter

Pedro Alvarez 0/9, 4BB, 5K

Adam Jones 4/9, 2HR, 3RBI

Matt Wieters 2/4, 2 2B, BB

Mark Trumbo 2/3

Manny Machado 0/3

Chris Davis 1/3, 2K

The Orioles hit Ventura hard in the first two innings to go up 5-0 early and the Royals blew scoring opportunities every inning against Jimenez who was the same as usual only he's facing a team that can't seem to score more than a run a game lately. Ventura then drills Machado in the fifth after pitching him inside the previous AB causing a bench clearing brawl on the mound which leads to the ejections of Machado and Ventura. The Orioles then poured it on with home runs to blow KC out in game two.

Volquez has yet to throw two bad starts in a row all season and he is coming off a bad start here and Tillman has looked more like his 2015 version here lately and will try to shake out of that here against a struggling Royals team.

Boston is still playing their game in SF and are down 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth. If they lose, they will fall 1.5 games behind the Orioles who are stomping the offensively challenged Royals into the ground. Detroit beat Toronto in extras today and have pulled into second place in the Central tied with KC three games behind Cleveland. The Tigers have won five in a row and Cleveland six, but the Indians are losing 6-0 to Seattle in the fifth inning. Also, the Nats are up 10-5 against the White Sox heading into the ninth.

Any idea who is going to start game one of the Toronto series against Stroman? It's all TBA's that I can find.

Probably someone who averaged 5 runs a a game or better over their last four starts like the StroShow.

It's going to be Wilson, right?
No idea. On MLB.com, all probable starters for the Orioles are TBA. Toronto will be starting Stroman, Estrada, Happ and Sanchez against us.

It's not Wandy.

    • And fouled off a hanging curveball right over the middle of the plate. That was the one to hit.
    • I was looking at career wRC+ on Fangraphs at 3000 PA the other day, and they have the Negro Leagues guys mixed in.    Soto and Judge near 3500 PA right now have about as many as some of those guys. Judge is running ahead of him by now, but Soto has the October wins over Hader, Kershaw, Cole while postseason Judge is ~200 PA of hitting .210. Absent an upset, this season is probably rolling towards Burnes-Bradish-Grayson competing with Soto-Judge about 30 times if an ALDS goes its 5-game distance. I'm curious to see if Sigbot arranges the big 3 for the first Yankee Stadium visit about 3 weeks out.
    • Using the pen for 9+ outs a game is wearing them down. We’re protecting the starters. I think we could see Akin optioned as a way to deload him.  Does Elias’ strategy actually make sense if you think about it?  He knew coming into the season how much we were going to use the pen. So spend money on proven guys, or prospects as currency, when we’d just wear them down anyway. I think we planned for this. We’ll load up on “fresh” arms around the deadline.  Fire up the shuttle.  Deload Akin a bit. Who replaces him?  Baker?  I actually like Baker. Krook is looking alright in AAA as well.
    • Has there been any update on where Aneuris Rodriguez will play and when?
    • Also can’t fault Hyde because we’re clearly doing the load management thing with our SP and we should be. Heck, only Burnes and Irvin haven’t hit the IL. I always go back to the comment about how Hyde said we were so tired in the playoffs last year and needed that break.  I think the strategy is that the bullpen is replaceable part’s essentially other than the top guys over 162. We’ll see how Elias GMs at the deadline.
    • Yeah he probably would have, but that doesn’t mean he shouldn’t have had the opportunity in the 6th. It’s not a fail one time and you’re out sport.
    • Is Nevin more valuable to us than Urias right now?  I’d say no, but it’s closer than it was on OD. At least Nevin would have a role. Starter vs LHP.
