The Zach Britton RP ERA record tracker

The all time record low ERA for a reliever is held by Fernando Rodney in 2012 where he had an ERA of 0.60 (641 ERA+). Zach Britton with 6 games left in the regular season has an ERA of 0.56 (796 ERA+). Will Zach break the record? I guess we'll have to wait and see. And no, I don't intend for this to conjure up an awful jinx spell, but if it does you can be sure I will disappear into the night so as to avoid being tied to a stake and burnt alive by the OH. ;)

Could someone with better math skills than me figure up how many runs he would need to give up to not beat this record?

Rodney gave up 5 ER in 74.2 IP. Zach has given up 4 ER in 64.1 IP. He can't give up another run or he won't break the record.

Yep - when your ERA is that low, it doesn't take much for it to shoot up a bit, especially for a reliever who doesn't have as many IP. If he were to have a bad inning a give up 3 runs, his ERA would jump up to almost 1.

These very low ERA marks all are also dependent on hit/error decisions and scoring rules. The three lowest marks (min 50 innings) are Britton, Rodney, and Eck. They allowed 3, 4, and 4 unearned runs, respectively.

In Rodney's 2012 season, on August 14th, he allowed a single, SAC/E3, long flyball out, K, single, loss, and was charged with no runs allowed.

On June 12, 1990 Eck got an out to end the 8th, then a K, E6, then a 3-6 PO... then double, single, steal, walk, double, walk. Gave up five baserunners a steal and four runs in the 9th, charged with none of them.

Britton allowed all three of his unearned runs on June 21st against the Padres. Grounder in the SS-3B hole Manny couldn't handle (maybe a lesser 3B doesn't touch it), then single, single, suicide squeeze... replaced by Despaigne, walk, single, ground out. And charged with nothing.

ERA is a weird thing. It's like counting dropped passes as completions for the QB.

Fair point, but if I had to change one of the two stats, I'd make legitimate drop passes NOT count against a QB, rather than runs-allowed-by-errors be counted against a pitcher. In both instances, the thrower has done his job - it's not his fault if his teammates don't hold up their end.

My perspective is that you record what happened in the official record and let the analysts assign blame and credit and hypotheticals after the fact. ERA asks basically an accountant (the official scorer) to reconstruct innings based on what might have happened without what he judged to be an error. While not at all addressing similar or related things like a ball going 2" over Mark Trumbo's glove that any reasonably competent fielder would have caught routinely.

That's what really gets me: the inconsistency in totally absolving a pitcher from the impacts of team on one hand, while not addressing it at all on the other. Yankee pitchers must have hated Jeter - surehanded but with the range of a statue. They took all the blame for his flaws.

So what is the record for RA/9 by a reliever (pick an innings threshold)?

It appears to be Rob Murphy at 0.72 in 1986. Min 50 IP. At 60 it's Britton. 70 Wade Davis.

So let's reconstruct history assuming errors and unearned runs weren't a thing, kind of like asking the official scorer to reconstruct an inning without errors:

Baseball Prospectus guy: Why don't we give the fielder some kind of demerit every time he boots a ball?

Other guy: Okay.

BP: We'll call it an "error" if he drops it, or maybe if we think he should have caught it without too much effort. But we'll kind of leave it up to one of our guys in the stands to figure it out.

Other guy: Well, that seems a little iffy. What if the fielder totally takes a wrong route to the ball? Or if the fielders run into each other, nobody touches it, and it just rolls to the wall?

BP: We won't deal with that right now. It's only an error if a guy gets there and muffs it.

Other guy: What if Kevin Keirmaier has it go off the tip of his glove after he runs 150 feet, while Mark Trumbo wouldn't have even moved?

BP: We'll account for that that in, like UZR or Statcast, or something. Also, we'll use these "errors" and a theoretical reconstruction of the inning by this same guy in the stands to absolve pitchers of blame for runs that might not have scored without the error. Then we'll use this as the primary way to figure out who was really the best pitcher in the league.

Other guy: You mean instead of just writing down what happened? You're actually going to use this stuff in a box score? Like in the newspaper, or the official game accounts? Not just in some obscure article that Jon Wilt and four other people will ever read?

BP: Yea, it'll be great.

Other guy: You statheads are a bunch of idiots.
