Bahama O's Fan
We should have done it with Machado and Tillman. Extend them as early as possible when their market is lower and they will be cheaper.
25 Nuggets
Can't argue. The best free agent contracts are the ones done early. Takes two to tango though.

Could be damaged goods or could be in a position in 2018 where he has to rebuild his value. There are risks on both sides of it. Manny had to prove his health. They weren't going to extend him coming of two knee surgeries. With that said, I'm on board with extending Gausman. I feel he has turned a corner. Clean delivery. Injury shouldn't be a huge worry. Can_of_corn
The kid isn't a winner. Sure he pitched well today but they lost. If he can't learn to inspire his teammates to score more runs for him he's never going to be an ace.
backwardsk
I don't find that there is much incentive for a SP like Gausman to extend early at team friendly prices.

I think that once they reach arbitration almost all incentive is gone. You need to strike in the first couple years.

MurphDogg
I think for pitchers there is always an incentive to extend, they are just more of an injury risk than position players.

OriolesMagic83
The O's should definitely offer him a contract. Maybe 4 years/$40 mill w/ 2 options? When you sign players well before free agency, you not only save money, you can have valuable trade chips. TB is a master at signing players to pre-arbitration deals. Their starters haven't been dominant, but they're signed to team friendly deals and have a ton of surplus value.

Yes, but when you have teams like the Dodgers who give out eight figure salaries to injured pitchers, the risk getting injured is minimized. scOtt
I thought I was polite. Meant to be. Gaus has little incentive to extend now. Except for that first little big contract he could get. 4/20. Buy out a year or 2 of FAgency.WAY more than he'll get in ARB. Set for life. He has nothing but upside. No choice but to hold out. Except for that quick set money thang...
