Fun with optionable pitchers

Wilson sent down. Crichton up.

These incremental changes don't seem like a big deal but they are. Buck and DD are doing their own little "moneyball" type formula. They've done this in the past but this year DD really went out and got a slew of guys with options.

Now everyone can see why we didn't bring back Hunter or Worley. Those types are great to pick up on August 31 to carry on a 40 man extended MLB roster.   Right now flexibility is more valuable.

Yep, we basically have:

-- 4 starters (until Tillman gets back)

   -- 5 permanent relievers

-- and then about 9 guys who take turns filling the remaining 3 or 4 pitcher roster spots, and who are almost always rested because once one pitches a significant amount he goes down.

The 5 permanent relievers are used primarily in games with leads or ties, only occasionally in close trailling games, so they stay fresh and hopefully can stay fresh all season.

I don't think there is another team in baseball that is doing something similar to this.   I know Boston has had some guys come up and down (Taylor, Workman, etc) but not to the extent we have.  I'll bet we have twice as many non-DL-related pitcher roster moves as any other team in baseball.

I'm a little surprised by this move.  I didn't think they needed to do it tonight with six guys available.

And that's why you send Wilson out. The risk of losing yet another starting pitcher within 2 innings.

Ynoa will be gone after this game and probably Chricton

Unless someone is DL'd who do we have to come up?  Asher, Wilson, Wright, Fry, Bleier, Verrett are out.  Aquino?

They should still be able to navigate the game with Ynoa, ODay, Givens, Hart, Brach, Britton, and Ubaldo.

Who is available to come up now.  Most don't have 10 days down unless you DL someone.

One possibility is that Miley's turn would be on Wednesday but we are off the following Monday. My point being if Miley went on the DL then we could recall Wilson for a spot start and technically Miley would only miss 1 start.

Yeah but we need someone tomorrow.  Lee pitched Wednesday so he is out.

If we put Miley on DL Verrett could be back, anyone. Then send down the reliever we call up when needed.

Yeah if we DL him it opens up options but if not they have to DFA someone or 60 day DL Santander.

My point about Miley is he would only miss 1 start. I mean it sucks for him if it isn't major but it isn't a back breaker. Of course if they call up a relief pitcher for Miley hard to say who the starter Wednesday would be.
