Mountcastle should not see Baltimore in 2018.  Mullins hasn't even had 200 at bats in Double A.

I could see Hays and Sisco getting early call-ups next year and perhaps even be considered for the opening day roster.

I don't think all four will be on the roster.  Before today, I thought it'd be a possibility that Mountcastle could come up at 3rd and move Machado to short.  An outside possibility.

That still means that the roster could have three starters at 26 (Machado, Schoop, and Mancini); a shortstop at 28; two outfielders (Hays and Santander) at 22; a catching tandem ages 32 and 23.  Then you have three more starters (the old guys) all 32.  Then round that out with two more bench spots and the position players don't look so old.

They aren't paying $45M+ to three 34 year olds.

What is with you and the hyperbolic comparisons today? Trumbo and Davis deals you may not be fond of, but to compare them to the panda situation...

Another poster mentioned the Red Sox.

And it's true, while the Sandoval contract will provide a lot less value for its cost, the Red Sox are much more able, and willing, to just write it off and cut him.

How bad will Davis have to be in 2021 for the O's to eat his contract?

How will the fact that they cut him effect their salary in terms of the luxury tax?  Will he still count until the contract runs out?

The Orioles ate $12 million on Jay Gibbons contract in 2008 at a time that their payroll was $67 million. Their payroll is $160 million+ now. I imagine that if Davis reaches Sandoval levels (-2.1 rWAR over his Red Sox career), the O's would cut Davis.

Worse than 4/50 for 5.12ERA baseball over 550 innings.

And for all of that, Ubaldo has been worth 1.2 rWAR and 4.4 fWAR in his Oriole career (pending update for tonight's game).  Not nearly Sandovalian.  Production is better from a WAR perspective and 4/50 is way better than 5/95 (then a 6th year option).  Not even close.

Again, comparisons of any Oriole contract to Sandoval with the Red Sox is nuts.

The Orioles fielded offers for Britton. They weren’t satisfied with the return, in part because of concerns about the health of a few prospects included in proposed deals. The Astros were one of the teams, according to a source.

I heard that there were at least three trades in the works that fell through. Proposals reached ownership. But in the end, the Orioles added infielder Tim Beckham at the deadline for a short-season Single-A pitcher, Tobias Myers, who has promise but is a long way from contributing at the major league level - if he gets there.
