Interview with Marc Topkin/Tampa Times on Beckham

Forewarned is forearmed.

Dan Connolly does a good interview with the Tampa Times beat writer.  There is a lot of insight into what kind of player Tim Beckham is and why the Rays traded him.  Topkin says Beckham will do 3 or 4 things really well but then does one thing that kills you.  And he gives examples.

Isn't that every player? Jones? Davis? Manny? They all come to mind.

No,  I don't think so.  Jones, Davis and Manny are pretty good in the clutch.   This sounds different.

Have you seen how many times Manny has killed a rally getting thrown out on the bases? Or when all Davis needs to do is get a ball in the air and strikes out?

The two examples provided are of Beckham playing 3rd and playing 2B, i.e. out of position for him. I won't put too much weight on those examples. Topkin seems down on Beckham in this interview and in articles he has written, so I will withhold judgment rather than trusting his opinion.

Hmm...kind of like that error in the 3rd inning yesterday. The rain-soaked dirt made the ball skip, but you have to stay down on the ball.

Yep, and as exciting as he is to watch on offense that play cost them two runs.

At the end of the day, Tampa had a better option and we had Tejada starting games. Beckham isn't perfect, but neither is our star third baseman currently hitting .245 and running into outs like it's his job. Our ace pitcher won't admit he's hurt. Our DH is on the shelf with four more home runs than Beckham. Our starting left fielder tonight is hitting .211 with 1 home run.

We have bigger problems than Tim Beckham right now.

Like the booted ball between his legs last night ...The home run was irrelevant after the defensive miscue.

Agreed that Gentry is an automatic out ....Smith is having a good year and lefties and Gentry isn't hitting against anybody ...Bad managing by Buck IMO
