The Marlins are clearly looking to dump salary. The only SPs I see them trying to trade are Chen and Volquez. Chen doesn't make sense, unless he's part of a Chris Davis trade, but that doesn't seem to fit the profile of what the new Marlin's ownership is trying to do (i.e., go lean and mean with the payroll).

They have reached out regarding starting pitching. Matt Harvey was discussed as a guy who could use a change of scenery.

O’s scouts like Jose Urena but haven’t been told whether or not her is available.

I heart Sir Loin.  Whether anything comes from these rumors, I trust your source and appreciate your injection of excitement into what usually is the most boring few weeks of the baseball year.

Volquez is a sunk cost for the Marlins and can't really be traded.  Signed only thru 2018 and is out for the year - TJ surgery in August.

Return of Chen? He is making a lot but maybe if we do something like Chen and Urena for Trumbo it could make it worth the big salary. For reference Chen is making 10m in 2018, 20m in 2019, 22m in 2020, and a vesting option for 16m in 2021 but we'd save the Trumbo money plus addition by subtraction by getting him off the roster and the 10m 2018 salary for Chen would leave flexibility to spend a little for the last year of the competitive window.

No!

I hope this just means the Orioles are exploring all options and not dismissing the idea of signing a Cobb or Lynn-type pitcher.

They're not signing Cobb or Lynn. No free agent pitcher in their right mind would come to the O's unless they had absolutely no other options. O's doctors already have taken millions out of Balfour and Gallardos wallets and to add insult to injury no one wants to pitch at Camden Yards. The trade market is the only place we will see a major addition. If you ask me the rumors about the interest in Cobb and Lynn was strategic to get the fans talking. After the backlash from the rumors about Vargas and Cashner it was clear that isn't good enough. That's just me speculating of course but it seemed fishy to me that first came alleged interest in the bottom of the barrel but realistic targets and after a negative reaction from fans the front office all the sudden became interested in the guys everyone hoped we'd be after anyways.

If you're going to put out that kind of money for a pitcher, sign a real one.

I figure in my hypothetical trade that you're paying the large salary for Chen in exchange for a decent mid rotation starter and the dump of Trumbo. Otherwise there's no reason for Miami to trade Urena and its nothing but a positive to get out from under the Trumbo contract.

Yes he is.

TJ hurt.

I wouldn't trade his contract for Trumbo, no siree!

I'd trade it for Davis.

If the Orioles could somehow land Yelich or Ozuna, I would have no problem taking on Chen.  Unlikely they are discussing either of those two with the Marlins, however.

But Chen is in an area of need and Trumbo represents a position of depth.   Trumbo is owed about 2/26, Chen 3/52.  There might be some common ground but Miami has Bour at 1B and a big of where Trumbo would be awful.

You got a guy with a bad elbow who has already had TJ once before.

It is very possible that he will need TJ this spring and be out for at the very least a full season.

Hypothetically:  would Mets accept Trumbo and Mullins for Harvey? Trumbo plays 1B until Smith is fully ready.
