Yeah exactly, DD is far from perfect, but compared to some of the previous ineptitude he’s been solid. I think the drafting/development side of things has improved under his leadership/hirings.

 I do get disturbed by DD’s apparent surprise at some of the market prices for free agents (although I’m not sure how much of his public statements are spin for casual fans).  

I think it’s impossible for any of us on the outside to properly assess blame or credit when it’s clear DD is operating under a fairly restrictive set of guidelines and isn’t the only power center when influencing PA.

I think what the O's management and ownership believe is if Tillman would have come back from his injury and pitched like he did in 2016 the O's would have made the playoffs.  That is how important the third starter is.  They would have been in the playoff in spite of the 4th and 5th starter stinking.

I think that is where they are now.   The need to get that third starter that can help them win.  Sure they need a 4th and 5th starter also but they don't have to of the same quality.

They finally admitted to themselves that they could not sign Manny .  That they might get the third starter by trading him.  But that has not worked yet.

The owner wants to win in 2018.  That has not changed.

They ae willing to spend some money to get starters.  Not 20m a year.  But 12 to 15m on a short term agreement.  The possibility of Manny being traded is still there.  Some free agents are still there.  There may be other trades for overpriced starters.  

The management and ovnership structure of the O's makes it work methodically.  But they have money to spend.  The owner wants to win this year and they will probably spend it.

I agree that they will shoot for the 2nd wild card and hope that Boston or the Yankee fall on their face and they can pass one of them.
