Who’s our GM & Manager Next Year?

I think Buck stays as manager with expanded powers to make player acquisition decisions.  Kind on like he had in Arizona.  The GM in Arizona  just did the negotiating of player contracts.  Buck picked the players.

I think there is a chance the Brian Graham becomes the GM and run scouting and player development. Here is some one Brian's background

Quote

Graham was signed to the Pirates on December 3, 2001 and eventually rose to be the senior director for player development. In that position, he coordinated instruction and oversaw the signing of free agents, staffing, budgets, player movement, affiliate relationships and the Latin American field operations. In addition, he installed and implemented a system of individual player plans which provided instruction and resources to insure the individual development of every Pirate player. Under Graham, the Pirates minor league teams finished with a combined winning percentage above .500 in four of his five seasons. In 2002, the Pirates were honored as the Topps' Baseball “Organization of the Year.”

There are two reasons I don't see Dan coming back.   1) Buck wants the expanded power of player selection.  2) Both Buck and Dan will want raises and Peter is not going to want to pay both of them.

Brady may get some expanded role but is does not have the management experience to take over the GM role  IMO.

Filling the Orioles GM slot from outside the organization will be difficult, given the public perception on how Angelos runs the organization.

I hadn’t thought of Graham, but this is a reasonable scenario.

Passable?    Sorry, but no.  -11 Rtot/yr, -16 Rdrs/yr, -7.7 UZR/150.   That’s pretty awful.    The plan for 2017-19 was/is to limit his time in the OF as much as possible.    They did a pretty good job of it, limiting him to 31 games, compared to 95 the year before.    I can tolerate that if he hits around his career average.

Trumbo in 1,012 plate appearances as a DH has a career OPS of 703.  This has to get better if he wants to remain an everyday player.

No guess here, but in my mind Dan has to go. Now whether or not you are a Dan guy, it does not matter. It is very apparent that he does not have ownerships ear, or he does and he is incompetent. Either way he has to go, because the end result is bad. That is one reason that I actually think Brady Anderson as GM might be good is because I think Brady has the trust of the ownership group and would be allowed freedom to operate as he see's fit. Now you can argue that Brady does not see straight, but I think a lot of the dis-function in the warehouse would go away. Buck? I like Buck. I would love to see Buck extended.

Hmm, Brady being promoted to GM gives Angelos an excuse to be more involved because of Anderson’s lack of experience.

Pass.

Because there is no team president position in Baltimore, the EVP/GM gig is even more enticing to the thousands of people who think they qualify for one of these jobs. Of which there are 30. To my knowledge, the checks never bounced and It's been a while since one was fired in town.

But memory serves correct, the spot is very hard to fill, with somebody that has qualifications to do the job.

I disagree. TLC let AA buy him out on it. He will never get another GM shot either.  And trader Dipoto preferred the Seattle sound. For good reason. Been a nice gig for him.

Thought they had been a difficult time before selecting DD, and back then, the Orioles were laughed at, as DD had been out of baseball for a bunch of years.

These GM jobs are rare jobs and even with the myriad of issues in Baltimore, it has become too easy to blame DD.  He is not and has not been perfect and I would gladly be open to another direction....But I continue to caution anyone who thinks bringing success here is simple.  It is not.

Brady Anderson as GM? Because Angelos likes him?  I saw this show, it was called Syd Thrift.  I'll pass.  With Angelos we have disfunction.  We have had names, and no-names, winners, and losers...we have had mixed results at best.  I'd like to note that if you look at Peter Angelos' wiki page, you will see that two weeks after Sports Illustrated named PA as the worst owner in baseball...Brady Anderson wrote a Op-Ed piece in the Baltimore Sun saying that PA was in fact one of the Best Owners in sports.

I have always admired PA. But there is no way around this fact.  He runs a dysfunctional franchise.  Once considered the best run franchise in sports, the Orioles since 1993, in the best baseball stadium in the world, have endured 25 seasons.  8 of the first 9 had attendance numbers above 3 Million.  None since 2001 and with DC having it's own team it will never see 3 million fans in one season again.  Of the 25 seasons, 20 have ended without playoffs and of those 20 non playoff seasons, 16 were losing seasons and 1 was a .500 season.

So yes, as hard as it is to get past all of the harm that DD has done to the beloved Orioles I ask all of us to look back at 25 years of baseball under Peter Angelos.  If you are counting at home, DD has produced 4 of the 9 winning seasons and 3 of 5 of the playoff seasons.  And yes the only non winning non losing season was his as well (the .500 season).  That is in 6 years.

Brady Anderson, as GM will see the return to losing upon losing, with continued losing and losing.

    • The earliest 2025 NFBC results exist, and slotted him about the 30th best AL starter for 2025 alone's expected statistical production.    Eflin and all five guys in Tampa's forecast rotation (Baz, McClanahan, Pepiot, Bradley, Springs) fell around that level. That assumes free agents Burnes, Snell, Flaherty, Kikuchi, Pivetta, Fried and Manaea fall about half into the AL. He'll start Opening Day, but it is a byproduct of the disappointing beginning to Grayson's career and Bradish's current injury. I think odds are pretty low he is a 2026 Oriole.
    • Whoever we add needs to be able to play a solid CF or LF at OPACY and Pham definitely does not fit that bill.
    • I'm one for Tommy Pham, even though I'll take heat for it.  I think the veteran aspect of it could be key. O'Neil would be great, but he also brings more of what we have in the Ks and HRs department
    • Let's see how he does over a full year here first so we don't overpay for a SSS. He was pretty pedestrian prior to the trade.
    • I could see against tough lefties Holiday sits, Westy at 2B, and Mayo at 3B.  Or Holiday at SS to spell Gunnar sometimes too and this being the configuration. But yes, most of Holiday at 2B, Westy at 3B and Mayo DH or 1B.
    • I don't think you bring Slater back if you add Bader (unless Austin's willing to take a MiLB deal and start the year at Norfolk) because then you have to get rid of either Urias or Mateo, and that doesn't seem wise with how thinned out the IF depth is now and Holliday still trying to get his feet under him.
    • This is true. However, it is more situational in the post season. Guys are pitched to differently. You have to take what the game gives you. Home runs happen, but the best teams know when to take that shot and when to shorten up or be more line drive oriented. Home runs can be a surprise to good hitters who simply were in time and put a good swing on plane through the ball. It was a line drive that ran out of field. Hitters have to know who they are. Some sit on fast balls early in the count in a certain small box. If they get it, they take that A swing. Or maybe they sit off speed early. They may take a strike that is more of a pitcher’s pitch, or one they were not looking for. if you’re sitting fastball early, not a great idea to swing at a curveball. Or vice versa. Whatever the case, with two strikes, you have to think contact and productive at bat. For some, that approach may be sooner in the at bat, of the situation dictates it. There is no BABIP if there is not a ball in play. So luck plays no role in a strikeout. It seemed like the Orioles, as a whole, in 2024 were looking a certain pitch, and if the pitch was hittable they would hack. Even if it was just off the plate. Too many big swings, and tons of resulting misses, in key situations where shortening up a bit was the better approach. Lastly, not many of our guys are true “home run hitters.” What I mean by that is when Santander strikes out swinging at a piece ch with a big cut. I get it. That is his game to be focused on driving the ball. That is what he gets paid to do. Along with that comes a fair amount of swing and miss, and roll over ground balls. Not all our hitters should be having the same approach. Gunnar may hit 35-40 home runs in a season, but he is a much more dynamic hitter than just a “home run guy.” He is capable of doing anything on the field. He is extremely talented, and we have a few more that may fall into that category some day. There are times to adjust and take what the game gives you. Go oppo for a single, put pressure on the defense. This game is hard, but we can do better. If we are going to win, we must do much better.
