It's pretty wild that the Orioles were living in the past that much. Here are a couple of relevant quotes from Angels GM Billy Eppler.

“In running through this with analytics departments I have worked with over the last 14 years,” Eppler said, “velocity is the No. 1 predictor of success.”

“If you have a sinker-ball pitcher and a fly-ball hitter, that’s actually a pretty good recipe for the hitter,” Eppler said.

But there have been very succesful pitchers who didnt throw hard and a lot of terrible pitchers who threw very hard.  Inflexible thinking will fail you everytime.

There is nothing in those quotes that points to inflexible thinking.

Everything in those quotes points to inflexible thinking. That is the reason the Astros tried so hard to trade Keuchel and no one wanted him. People like easy answers and dont feel like making much effort to actually judge each player individually.

I disagree.    Every team knows that velocity isn’t the only important thing in analyzing a pitcher, and that lower velocity pitchers can succeed if they have other attributes.  You’d literally have to be ignorant of the game not to know that.

At the same time, high velocity greatly improves a pitcher’s odds of success.   And teams that underemphasize that do so at their peril.   I say this as a fan who loves to watch great finesse pitchers at work.

I was never fully on board with targeting ground ball guys since normally 4 seam fastballs lead to more strikeouts and pop outs.  But it was an article about just that phenomenon that put me in camp fly ball pitcher.  Especially after guys started changing their swing path to put more balls in the air.

It's just a minor league deal. No harm in seeing what a player has at this point.

I agree completely Tx.   Was just making a play off of an old Bo Jackson commercial.     That commercial seemed to run on a never ending loop!
