The Shorebirds top the South Atlantic League at 12-2.    They’re one of the older teams in the league, 2nd among position players at 21.9, 3rd among pitchers at 22.4.  Interestingly, their performance tracks that, 2nd in runs/game at 5.18, 3rd in ERA at 2.84.

Top performing prospects among the hitters include 22-year old Robert Neustrom (.995 OPS) and 20-year old Adam Hall (.844).   Other prospects of note include 21-year old Doran Turchin (.780), 22-year old Cadyn Grenier (.756), and JC Encarnacion (.650).    Will Robertson is hitting very well (.886), but at 24 is probably not a prospect.

The pitching staff is led by 19-year old Grayson Rodriguez, dominating so far with a 0.54 ERA and 15.1 K/9.   23-year old Blaine Knight sports a 1.15 ERA and 10.3 K/9.  22 old Ofelky Peralta, denoted this year from Frederick, is making his case to get back there with a 1.69 ERA and otherworldly 19.4 K/9 so far.   19 year old Drew Rom had one tough outing out of three, and that leaves him with a 4.63 ERA but 15.4 K/9.  23-year old Gray Fenter is also racking up K’s (16.2 K/9) while posting a decent 3.86 ERA.    Overall, the staff is striking out 12.4 per 9 IP, which easily leads the Sally League.

Though the team as a whole is a bit old for the league, there are lots of interesting prospects here, some of whom may find themselves in Frederick as the season progresses.

Robertson has legit raw power, but not many other tools.

Delmarva winning so much is maybe a surprise to some but there is the solid mix of what was a very successful Aberdeen team in the 2nd half of the 2018 short season. That group is playing great defense and together with high quality starting pitching and relievers who throw strikes, all the hitters need to do is find a way to just get one more run than the other guys. Given that the field players seem to be smart about getting on base and stealing a bit more, its no surprise that just by playing smart baseball they win a lot of games that might not have always gone their way in the past. With Neustrom hurt a bit, Thorburn stepped in and delivered. It seems a new guy every day makes a key hit or gets a key out. Baseball is still a team game and once the pitching stays solid, every game is winnable. I'd argue that The upper management may very well have used some formulaic strategy regarding pitcher assignment and then applied a mix of collegiate and young draftees to fill in the field. The Shorebirds play simple mistake free baseball and the results show that pitching can even be spotty  at times and the field crew can take what the opposition gives them to win a 10-9 hit-fest if need be. They are well coached and play smart baseball. Knight obviously is ready for more, and several other pitchers are maybe better than A ball as well.

On Memorial Day, the Shorebirds’ record stands at 38-11.    That’s the best record in minor league baseball.

The Shorebirds have the third best offense in the Sally League, at 4.96 runs per game.   They have the best pitching in the league, at 3.47 runs allowed per game (3.06 ERA).

The most noticeable thing about the Shorebirds is they have three starting pitchers with ERA’s of 1.51 (Peralta), 1.50 (Rodriguez) and 1.45 (Rom), and a fourth starter, Blaine Knight, was promoted after posting a 0.68 ERA in 5 starts.   Gray Fenter hasn’t exactly been a slacker, posting a 2.17 ERA in 6 starts and 2 relief appearances.  Several relievers are also doing well.

They have been a fun team to follow. I love the starting pitching. Rodriguez with five shutout innings so far today.

They have already eliminated one team in their division and several others are close. Only 18 games left in the first half after today.

They let him throw 100 pitches today.
