If he keeps up this pace, what is it in July?

Who needs him?

How much is he worth to them?

How many other pitchers of equal or higher value are available?

Just so many questions to be answered before a value can be placed on him and his contract.

Yeah. That's true. Any injuries on contenders?

He’s a 4-5 IP SP to a contender. If they’re trying to win games then he has an extremely short leash and nothing more. The Brewers seem to love ex Oriole Pitchers. Fits the mold of getting the bullpen heavily involved.

Dumping his salary and getting one top 30 organizational prospect would be a win.

What did the O's give up for Scott Feldman?  Arrieta and Strop, but the versions of them with 6+ ERAs.  So there you go, something less than a couple broken pitchers who had been sliding into unpitchability for years but you think maybe with some magic you could fix.  95% of the time it doesn't work.  Or maybe, like, the Twins' 22nd-best prospect.

The Padres did get Tatis Jr. for James Shields.

They got Paddack for Rodney... sometimes you luck out. Sometimes it's a dud though.

I'd be happy with a failed top prospect or guy with a big tool in exchange for a few months of Cashner. See if our new coaches can unlock something valuable. We came into spring training hoping Cashner would get through the summer without us wanting to see him cut for ineffectiveness. If we end up getting a lottery ticket for him, it's a bonus.

Shields was actually a good pitcher, and that was still a huge return.  His worst ERA in the preceding five years was 4.28 and he'd led the league in things like starts and innings.  From 2015-18 Cashner is 26-53 with a 4.51.  He's a random 4th/5th starter who isn't particularly durable.

Cashner was a bad sign. Most of our high dollar signs were “ha ha see what the funny Orioles are doing” signs.

Nobody wants any of our FA signs. There may be some interest in one or two of our young players, but Cashner/Cobb?

Forget it.

The Astros got a comp pick and some relief pitcher for Bud Norris. I think if Castro keeps pitching well we will get something of value for him.  He has a relatively low salary and every team needs pitching.

Cashner was ranked by MLBTR as one of the better FA SP that was available, and I believe he was signed right in line with their prediction was.

Nothing wrong with the Cashner signing, except that the team turned out to be terrible.
