Our best hope is that the Tigers become enamored with Torkelson and Martin falls to us, but from everything I've read it's gonna take a lot for the Tigers not to pick Martin.

I've been scouting a lot of player who could be available for us to pick in the 30 and 39 range. Hoping to make a list of preferred candidates soon. Keep in mind it's a lot harder to gauge which high school players would be available there though, and this would not account for any underslot/overslot shenanigans.

I'd be very happy to take Tork. Sure, it's always preferable to take a player that mans a more demanding defensive position, but getting a great weapon to be your likely future #4 hitter for many years to come is a great consolation prize.  Those 30 and 39 picks are definitely going to be interesting.  I look forward to reading your takes on the list of guys in that late 1st / early 2nd (25-50 maybe?) range.

Fun (I believe to be a ) fact: The Orioles have NEVER drafted a 1st baseman in the First Round of the Draft.  The closest we have taken would be Billy Rowell, who was drafted as a HS 3rd-baseman in 2006, and supplemental pick Ryan Mountcastle, a HS SS.
Eddie Murray was a 3rd rounder in 1973.

I would add in Brandon Snyder as well, drafted as a HS catcher, but who was thought to be an eventual 3rd baseman or 1st baseman. By his first full season at Delmarva he was pretty much a full-time first baseman.

Wasn't it a shoulder injury that cemented the move?

Good catch.  No pun intended, but I imagine none was taken. LOL! ?

Whoa... Nick Gonzales is having a remarkable start to the season!
In 48 at bats (plate appearances not given) he has 12 HR, 36 RBI, 18 BB's, 7 K's, and 4/5 in SB's!
His slash line: BA .500/OBP .652/ SLG 1.354/ OPS 2.006 !!!!

I get that he plays on the moon in NM State, but still...

He did very well in the Cape Cod wood bat league last year, hitting .351 in 42 games, while walking 20 times and striking out 22 times.

He'll go early in the draft, but how early is the question.  I look forward to reading the opinions of more educated folks regarding Nick's potential.

I’m not an expert, but I absolutely love Gonzalez. His swing is a thing of fundamental beauty, no wasted movement. For me, I’m ecstatic if we get either him or Tork.

Pitching does win championships, but the attrition rate for pitchers is higher, so I lean towards an elite bat. But I would be happy with Lacy. I don’t want Hancock at #2.

Any reason why? Have you watched both of them? I would take the pitcher who has above average command now vs the guy who has below average command at the same velocity and age 9 times out of 10.

I've watched both pitch.

Hancock has an elite arm.   FB can hit upper 90's.  His secondary offerings are all pretty good.

Lacy is lefty.  FB consistently in Mid 90's.  Secondaries were not as good as Hancock's last year, but look improved this year.    Lacy has better FB command, Hancock has better secondaries command.

Personally prefer Lacy.

No I have not, admittedly, but have read reports that Hancock’s secondaries are inferior to Lacey’s, and Lacey is a lefty obviously. Also it’s concerning that Hancock hasn’t pitched all that well to start the year whereas Lacey has. Long season still, and my opinion right now is solely based on gut feeling. Have you watched them both?

    • Oh, I thought you were taking about his hitting in high leverage situations.
    • Frustrating sure, but boring is not what I would I say. We do steal bases at times. I would like for us to play more small ball sometimes and it is frustrating to see us be so homerun happy. I think with Westy back, we will see a resurgence of timely hitting as that is very contagious.   We saw that at the beginning of the year. Amazing sight to see for sure. I think the most disheartening thing that really shocked me is the apathy and outright disgust I’ve seen from O’s fans toward their team. Perhaps we have been spoiled? No idea. Maybe expectations were too high? No idea, but frankly, a lot of yall focusing on other things and simply not watching/posting would make next season a lot more enjoyable. This is the first time since 96-97 where we make the playoffs in back to back years and you guys have been acting like some real lame jerks this whole dang season. Frankly, yall should be ashamed of yourselves. We are an incredibly young team and with that come highs and lows, but yall don’t see that. You just love to complain and moan and bloviate. Where’s the heart? Where’s the loyalty? Where’s the gratitude? You’d think with all this team has overcome, especially being so young, y’all would be happy, but no. So go off on your little bike rides or whatever. Go watch a movie if this saga seems boring to you. I don’t care. Just for once this season, keep your immense negativity to yourself.
    • Really an amazing run, 4 straight years. I completely agree with the ranking, too. There's no way Kjerstad is still a prospect though, right? 45 days is the cutoff and he's played in 48 games.
    • i think we all are going to have ptsd from that 9th inning for a while,it was that brutally bad . they need to do some special to get us to forget about it
    • wow,did gunnar and adley have to do this last season?
    • I suggested that earlier but I think it's probably a bad play with no out. The O's have like 85% probability of scoring. There is a huge downside risk of Mullins popping up the bunt for a double play. He could also whiff on the bunt making at least Holliday an easy out. With one out and only 65% probability of scoring it's a much better play. I think if Santander and Mullins were reversed in the lineup Hyde may have done it but not when you have two shots to get the run in.
