The Silver Lining Report (Games 51-54/162) - CATCHING UP!

Sorry y'all, the holiday weekend has me a little backed up on these, so I hope you're ready for an overdose of rainbows and unicorns.

Game 51 (O's lose 8-6)

  • John Means: His last start was a solid enough one, going 5 IP and giving up 3 runs. He certainly outpitched Colorado's Hoffman, and gave the O's a chance to win.
  • Branden Kline: Quickly becoming one of the only trustworthy bullpen pieces at the moment. He went an inning in which he struck out the side. Nice!
  • Paul Fry: Fry with a clean inning to get back on track after a couple iffy appearances. At this time of this game he's rocking a solid 3.32 ERA.
  • ?Keon Broxton: Go ahead new guy! Blasts a 2-run bomb on the first pitch he sees as an Oriole. That'll work! He also added a single.
  • Renato Nunez: Well, well. Someone's on fire, as we'll learn as we go along in this thread. This one was a pinch hit dong to give the O's a 6-3 lead at the time. Alas...
  • Dwight Smith, Jr.: Oh right, we're playing in Colorado. Another dong! Smith's 9th.
  • Hanser Alberto: The BABIP master continues to do his thing. Another 3-4 night to keep him above the .300 mark. Hey, whatever works out there.
  • RBI doubles: Severino and Villar came through with RBI knocks.
  • Offense: Well, you have to like that part of this game. The 'pen was mostly a mess, but otherwise this had the makings of a win on the road. Let's see about the next one.

Game 52 (O's win 9-6)

  • Andrew Cashner: Not the best start but  the game went the way it should have gone for Means in the last one. 5 IP, 5 ER, 5 Ks, but the W.
  • ?Josh Lucas: HUGE relief outing for Lucas as he picked up the 3 inning save. And save he did, as the bullpen was toasted from the previous game. Unicorn for you.
  • Renato Nunez: Yep! Still on the dinger binge. Another solo shot. It was a 2 RBI night for him, however, as he knocked in the first run of the ballgame.
  • ?Jonathan Villar: Boooooooooom. Jonny goes Earl on 'em. He was also a triple shy of the cycle in a 3-hit affair for him. He needed this game a little bit. Nice to see him have a productive night.
  • MOAR RBI: Wilkerson, Alberto, and Smith all had RBI singles.
  • Pedro Severino: Don't look now, but the data says Pedro is one of the team's most valuable players. His OBP ranks second on the team and he went 4-5 in this one. He's killing lefties as well. What a fantastic pickup he's been. I think DFAing Sucre was more about getting Severino more playing time than it was about getting Wynns on the roster.
  • HITS: 17 of 'em, a season high. Of those I didn't name yet, Mancini had 2 hits with a double, and Martin and Broxton each had singles.

Game 53 (O's lose 8-7)

  • David Hess: I mean... alright? He got into the 6th inning and looked good for about half of those until he started coughing up some hits. Early on, though, it was looking good.
  • Keon Broxton: Been a little bit of an adventure in CF, but he had a nice RBI double and added another hit. Stays hot as an Oriole as his average creeps up to .200.
  • ?Trey Mancini: Two-run triple! Heck yeah.
  • Hanser Alberto/Austin Wynns: Wynns bunt! Alberto scores on it! It was very exciting.
  • MOAR RBI: Look, I'm just trying to catch up... I have to cut some corners. The offense stayed hot as Smith had a sac fly, and Villar and Nunez had RBI singles.
  • HITS: 11 more of 'em. It's a shame the bullpen didn't show up in Colorado or it could have easily been a sweep by the O's. They were in every game.

Game 54 (O's win 5-3)

  • Gabriel Ynoa: Solid little fill-in outing of 4 IP, 2 ER. I'll take that.
  • ?Dan Straily: Now this kind of appearance we can use. Freshly punted from the rotation, Straily looked pretty good out of the 'pen going 4 IP with 1 ER.
  • ?Shawn Armstrong: Save! Someone finally did it!
  • Rentao Nunez: Another home run. That's 3 of them in these 4 games and he's RED hot.
  • Jonathan Villar: Speaking of homers, Villar got into his second of this 4-game stetch. Nice!
  • Hanser Alberto: Does the guy ever stop getting hits? No he does not. Another 2-4 in this one.

Whew... running out of steam. Back to a regular schedule after this!

    • I wouldn’t call that a “real strength”. Trade Perez and get a better arm to replace him.
    • But that RH bat played a position that we had locked down because of the presence of Urias and Westburg. He wasn’t going to come up and play. If you wanted him to be the RH DH, that’s fine but the Os also lost Mounty and Mayo didn’t come up and play well. They decided that having those 4 players was enough depth to use Norby to get pitching. I don’t see that as being wrong at all…no one to predict what would happen after. They had that “position” locked down. Jimenez was just a lottery ticket and really he played a lot more than they probably thought because of all the injuries that occurred.
    • The 2025 bullpen looks like a real strength. R - Bautista, Cano, Dominguez, Webb L - Coloumbe, Soto, Perez, Akin I like having the 4 lefties with the WALL and that should be enough for the regular season.  It allows us to really matchup and take advantage of our ballpark. That’s a pen with 4 former All Stars. I believe Akin will still have an option since he made it through the season without burning his last one.  He’d be the guy to go down to AAA for a longman/fresh arm when needed. Maybe we get our lightning in a bottle reliever throwing near 100 in McDermott or Morfe later in the year. I don’t think we see much turnover here.  However, I could see Elias electing not to bring back Soto for flexibility reasons, more so than salary reasons.  Could we actually “sell” Soto for something of value?
    • https://www.masnsports.com/blog/reviewing-orioles-recent-coaching-history-and-thoughts-on-what-s-next From Roch.    An immediate reaction to the current openings is that Triple-A Norfolk manager Buck Britton could be a candidate to fill one of them. They also could seek a bilingual coach now that González and Hernández are gone. Britton’s contract expires at the end of the month and he’s close with the young hitters who passed through Norfolk. He’s also gained the respect of other teams in the majors and could move on, which would leave the Orioles with another task.
    • If we don’t resign Burnes then what are we doing as a franchise?  It’s hard to see any difference between Rubenstei and what we had before. A case can be made for not bringing back Santander.  Heck, even Soto, but with our SP injuries, and the way we’ve spent our draft capital, the plan looked to be to always land that big time SP from outside the org.  Well that happened.  Gotta keep him now.
    • He called it a solid trade at the time it was made and he’ll die before he admits he was wrong about something.
    • There was a need for a RH bat. We used a major league ready RH bat (who was also serviceable in the field) in the trade for Rogers. We added a bad RH bat, who was not able to play defense at all.  Neither Eloy or Rogers were able to keep their spot on the roster, and we had two guys go down that would have opened spots for Norby. So yes, it does have something to do with the Rogers trade.
