I think Villar will be non-tendered if he is not traded by December 1. Maybe they'll find someone they can work a Jim Johnson-like deal with, or maybe they'll get back a legit prospect by paying part of Villar's salary.

It would be quite an accomplishment for Elias to trade Villar by the non tender date.   Other GMs are more likely to wait Elias out to see if Villar get tendered.

I think he's tradeable, he just won't bring back much of anything.  Think Jim Johnson.

I am on the fence on whether Elias trades Villar.

On the one hand Elias says if does not increase the talent in the organization he will not do it.  That rules out a Johnson like trade.

On the other hand Elias has expressed that budget is important which rules in a Johnson like trade.

I just don't know what happens.

The GM meetings started yesterday and run through Thursday. By then he should have a pretty good idea of who, if anyone, is interested and under what circumstances..

Could be they seek more low level minor league talent like DSL players or other lower level minor league players like they did in the Cashner trade, than the Johnson trade where it saw them get a 4A type such as Jemile Weeks and David Freitas. I can't believe that the market is going to be higher on Villar now that what it was on July 31st especially if it believes that Villar will be non-tendered and if they wait they might not have to trade anything for his services. The DSL players may not ever reach the majors but I think the FO values these types more than 4A types that you know what you are going to get and I would rather them trade for them than 4A guys.

I think they will tender Villar next year as I don't think they are going to tear down the payroll just for the heck of it and someone still has to start at second/short next year even if they will probably lose 100. If I had to guess the only non-tender will be Bleier.

Jim Johnson was coming off a fairly bad season (though not the disaster some made it out to be).   Villar is coming off one of his best years.   Villar should fetch more.   Not saying he gets a king’s random, but more than what we got for JJ.

    • Are there any other qualifications other than signing a contract for 50+M?  A contract of that value spread over 3-4 years would give him a raise and make other teams give some consideration to sign him.  I think that's the only way a QO would work for him.  But I don't think they put him in jeopardy - altho the Orioles could match an offer, I suppose.  I think they value him pretty highly even if he won't command top money.
    • I did say "unlikely" before "no matter what." Now that I re-read that though, it's kind of a bizarre sentence so I can see why you interpreted it that way. Of course there's a shot a player taken at 1-22 succeeds. Elias is certainly above average at drafting, possibly well above average, but the odds are still against him here, as they are for pretty much any individual pick he makes. I'm not trying to knock Elias here, just stating the fact that the vast majority of players selected in the back of the first round don't turn into solid regulars and so you shouldn't pass up someone you think is more likely to succeed here to draft "for need." I'm certain someone who will be available at this pick will have an incredible major league career. The odds are against it being whoever we draft though. That's just math.
    • I used to think we had a plethora of outfielders ready to replace the current guys, but not I'm not sure. Cowser is one. Does the FO trust Stowers? Heston is another as far as his bat goes, but how bad is the defense if you have Stowers, Cowser and Heston? How long before Bradfield is ready? Will Norby or Mayo move to the OF? Does that make it any better. If Santander has his typical year, I would give him the QO. So what if you have to pay him large for one year? It's not like our payroll is high right now.
    • Or maybe he just is hesitant because he knows it’s best to give up a single than letting it get by you for a triple or inside the park homerun. I highly doubt Cowser gives a crap about WAR. There is nothing in the guy’s demeanor, personality, or anything that suggests he chases stats and places himself above the team. To say otherwise is quite ridiculous at best, and malicious at worst. He is a rookie and he will get more comfortable as he plays. With that comfortability will come trusting his ability more and more. Why even suggest a thing like you are suggesting? Just pathetic quite frankly on your part.
    • On the spot?  Maybe.   Even at full health, people would have accepted not winning the division because of the pace the Yankees are on.   We have a comfortable lead for the WC so if the Orioles can continue winning at a reasonable pace with Burnes/GRod/Kremer/Irvin/Povich/Suarez.   As far as the playoffs go, there’s only a few starters that inspire confidence in a playoff series that will be available.   Elias isn’t trading Holliday, Basallo, or Mayo.  He just isn’t.   He can get relievers without giving up top prospects.  The question is, can he get someone like Crochet without giving up those top 3?   Crochet, despite innings concerns, gives you a playoff starter plus someone who’ll be here after Burnes is gone. However, Crochet is an A.J. Preller type of move, not an Elias type of move.   If Povich looks the part of a ML starter AND no more starters go down, I could see Elias standing pat on the starters and fortifying the back end of the bullpen.
    • If a team that loses a qualifying free agent does not receive revenue sharing and did exceed the luxury-tax salary threshold the previous season, it is awarded a compensatory pick after the fourth round. San Diego Padres Compensation for Josh Hader. The Astros forfeited their second-round pick for signing Hader. San Diego Padres Compensation for Blake Snell. The Giants forfeited their third-round pick for signing Snell. Toronto Blue Jays Compensation for Matt Chapman. The Giants forfeited their second-round pick for signing Chapman.
    • If a team that loses a qualifying free agent does not receive revenue sharing and did not exceed the luxury-tax salary threshold the previous season, it is awarded a compensatory pick after Competitive Balance Round B.   Los Angeles Angels Compensation for Shohei Ohtani. The Dodgers forfeited their second- and fifth-round picks for signing Ohtani.
