2020 Round 2 (39): Hudson Haskin - OF - (Soph)(Tulane)

Recommended Posts

We certainly need a good CF prospect, and I like things that I'm reading about him, but I haven't seen him ranked in the top 50 anywhere.  He is certainly not an overslot propsect.  It's hard for me to believe that he was the best player available at this point.

It's looking more and more like the Angelos boys are being cheapskates.  Yes, I know that they ponied up for Rutschman last year, but if the Angelos' family's finances were more shaky than other teams' going into the season, they may feel the need to retrench more in response to the pandemic than other owners.

They scouted a lot of these obscure North Eastern spots last year if I recall correctly. Isn't that how they found Welk and others? Also, I remember last year they went college bat heavy in the draft also. Then turned around and got a lot of pitchers in the International (J8 campaign, or whatever they marketed it as). Have to wonder if it'll be the same strategy this year.

That the O's don't want to spend $13,894,300 on players.

Until someone confirms that, I'm going with the guess that Elias & Co. did a lot of homework and they know who's willing to sign and who isn't and that's what's guiding the strategy.  Not saying you're wrong but I'm not going to go there just yet.

He has a big number supposedly. Sophomore draft eligible.

Sure it's a hot take.

Yes maybe that swing played at Tulane...but I just watched it...his back leg pivot forward has this two part hitch...he has to lose velocity and seems he is swinging mainly through  his upper body in that video....man, lot of work going to be needed there.

That's the only thing I can figure. A lot of guys may be interested in college for another season and a real draft next year. Otherwise, this draft so far is underwhelming.

"During Haskin’s freshman campaign, he received 245 plate appearances and produced 19 doubles, four triples, 10 home runs, 52 RBI’s, a 10.6% walk rate, 11.8% strikeout rate along with a slashing line of .372/.459/.647/1.106.

....

Along with these stellar results, the right-handed batter carried his performance into this spring and was on pace to record more walks than strikeouts. In total, the power-hitting righty earned 84 plate appearances and created six doubles, one triple, one home run, 14 RBI’s, a 16.7% walk rate, 11.9% strikeout rate, and a slashing line of .333/.452/.500/.952."
