Yardball85
For all his antics, Puig seems like a good guy. We got guys like Dwight Smith and Stewart... never worry about blocking players like that. And with Mancini out for the year, ya gotta present a legitimate major league team. Puig is almost certainly not the next Nelson Cruz, but he's a decent ML starter, and the fans are owed a legitimate product on the field. This. Until we know the $$, IDK how you can decide either way. Maybe they think they can get him for a million or less. Maybe they expected to spend their full draft allotment and negotiations just went better. Maybe they think they can trade Puig for someones 2020 5th rounder they liked... Who knows, but at the right deal it could make sense. And I can't imagine this year we have any intention of spending much to acquire him. ME didn't just change his whole philosophy for one guy. I'd imagine it's an extreme buy low possibility that has reached a point of value.

Puig also has multiple 4+ WAR seasons worth perhaps $30M annually. Cruz turned a good contract year into 4/$57M at age 34 (Puig will be 30 in 2021). I am not saying this is the most likely outcome, just a possible upside scenario with Cruz being "proof of concept". If Puig puts up 30 HR with decent defense and 4 WAR, he would certainly be in for a long term contract in that territory. In a short season with prorated salaries, it seems like grabbing free agents in hopes of flipping in trade or QO is a pretty good value bet proposition. Cruz cost us $8M investment. Puig might be a fraction of that with the same upside potential.
