Can’t pitch same guys over and over. Could have went elsewhere but needs to rest some arms and plenty of game to get thru.

Cardinals are going to pitch the same guys over and over.  I feel bad for everyone on the team that was trying to do the right thing.

If they keep hanging around the race when possible I  would play some option games.

Send down Phillips and call up Kremer as an example.

I question whether our pitching prospects are good enough to justify the service time game. And it’s certainly no longer applies to Mountcastle, and as much as I dread watching him play in left field, he cannot possibly be as bad as Smith is, so even if their defense is roughly equivalent, it makes more sense to let Mountcastle get major league whacks.

They aren’t good enough and calling them up here to help out doesn’t mean you can’t leave them down at start of next year anyways. I mean after this year are two rookies going to be in rotation to start the year?  I doubt it. They will have a couple of Milone types I bet to fill it out.

Also calling up an arm for a couple of days doesn’t mean you can’t send them back down either.

I know, it doesn't make a lot of sense if that is the reasoning behind it but if not, what is?  Elias seems oddly reticent to promote guys.

Whole class of them.  I'd take Tatis given a choice.

Let's define the class:

Tatis
Soto
Alonso
McNeil
Acuna
Albies?
Bichette
Guerrero
Biggio

We going to throw Robert and Adell in there?

Sure does seem like a lot of great young talent has come up the past couple years.   And I'm sure I missed a name or two.

Maybe he wanted one last look at some these guys before having to make 40 man moves. Most of pen has been solid. I think he should start using last guy or two and take advantage of options.

What is rule this year?  15 for pitchers and 10 for position players to stay down?

Phillips is awful. Even when he’s not awful he’s still awful, because you know he’s about to be awful again in just a second. It is extremely frustrating that the guy who sweeps out the dugout after the game is probably a better pitcher than Phillips and the Powers refuse to replace him.

    • Could fit the profile Elias likes of veteran free agents who might be willing to sign for few years at higher AAV's. I love the splitter. I'd be interested. Free agent means no posting fee, correct? Not that it matters.
    • All the talk about facing LH pitchers and needing RH bats to match up - I think it’s a bit overblown. Our approach was terrible and our guys failed to play team baseball just as much against RHP w/ platoon advantage. Guys just consistently failed to do their job.
    • I agree on both parts here. I’ve been reflecting on my love for baseball. Even the postseason helped me realize I enjoy the slow burn of the regular season.  I also am far away from MD and for me Baltimore is part of my cultural roots (both parents from the area). So in some sort of way, like you said, maybe there’s a healthy separation and more tolerance for failure. Maybe even nostalgia, lol. But I’ll take it.
    • I don’t live in Maryland either, but I still have family that are there and most of them are more into the Ravens, yet they send me O’s stuff all the time — which really isn’t a great pulse for O’s fan expectations. I think from the time I lived there until now (which is a few decades), Baltimore is definitely more of a football town. Maybe my family does reflect the times? As for OH and representation, that’s a fascinating question. To me, the OH feels like the place is generally a group of the hardcore of the hardcore baseball fans, with some part timers mixed in. The differences tend to break on personality types (cynics, optimists, realists — and a handful of comedians). If Elias only tweaks a couple things and doesn’t make any fundamental changes (like maybe drafting more pitchers) or pretending nothing can be done about RISP — then any glow about the rebuild will truly fade, at least in my house.
    • The lack of velocity will be issue I think in majors at his age but the secondary pitches must be very good.  It is interesting that in Japan the splitter is like the cutter/sweeper is in MLB.  It seems Asian league goes more for the up and down movement while MLB pitching strategy is the lateral movement of pitches.
    • They could let Suarez and Pederson walk who have team options to free up money or try and move Montgomery and get part of his salary off there books but I do think they will look at adding a less expensive option.
