Infield defense

Lots of moving parts in our minor league infields, but here’s a few numbers:

Norfolk

2B: Jones 4 errors in 10 games, Urias 3 errors in 9 games, 6 others 3 errors in 18 games

3B: Bannon 3 errors in 15 games, McCoy 0 errors in 6 games, Nevin 1 error in 5 games, Leyba 1 error in 4 games

SS: McCoy 4 errors in 17 games, Martin 1 error in 11 games, Urias 1 error in 7 games.

Bowie

2B: only 1 error all year, by Cullen.  Vavra errorless in 18 games there.

3B: Dorian 6 errors in 30 games, Torres/Yahn 5 errors in 5 games

SS: Grenier 2 errors in 26 games, Ortiz errorless in 6.

Overall Ortiz has played 6 at SS, 4 at 2B and 2 at 3B without an error at Bowie.

Aberdeen

2B: Graffanino 2 errors in 17 games, Hall 4 errors in 15 games, Ortiz 1 error in 5 games

3B: Welk 5 errors in 24 games, Graffanino no errors in 4 games, Ortiz no errors in 2 games, Westburg 1 error in 2 games

SS: Ortiz no errors in 14 games, Hall 6 errors in 12 games, Westburg 1 error in 10 games, Graffanino no errors in 3 games

Hall 10 errors in 27 games combined, Ortiz 1 error in 21 games.

Delmarva

2B: Hernaiz 2 errors in 15 games, Servideo 3 errors in 13 games

3B: Westburg 2 errors in 11 games, Henderson 4 errors in 10 games, Hernaiz no errors in 7 games

SS: Henderson 8 errors in 19 games, Westburg 2 errors in 8 games, Hernaiz 2 errors in 6 games, Servideo 2 errors in 4 games.

Henderson 12 errors in 29 games, Westburg 4 errors in 19 games, Hernaiz 4 errors in 28 games.

We all know errors are not the only measure of defense.   But overall, you have to be very impressed with Grenier and Ortiz, and worried about Henderson and Hall.

In my mind the Orioles are doing a lot of these guys any favors by moving them through multiple positions. Now that Westburg has been moved to Aberdeen, Henderson should be the everyday SS.

They have calmed things down a bit in Bowie where Grenier is basically the everyday SS. i get it that they have depth, but put the guys you think have the best chance to stay at that position and you move every one else around.

Since Westburg was promoted Gunnar has been playing almost exclusively SS. He has made 7 errors in the last week (since June 11).

Most people seem to agree Hall isn’t a SS

Ortiz and Grenier are regarded as the two best def players, and it shows.

For most players who want to make the ML positional versatility is important. Moving a guy like Jones around at triple A makes sense, if he can actually defensively play any of the positions. Even wander Franco has played games this year at 2b and 3b (mostly at SS)

So he’s been wandering around a little?

Thanks for putting those numbers together. I knew Ortiz and Grenier were doing really well. Disappointing numbers for Gunnar. Makes you wonder if he might be headed in the Mountcastle direction. If his bat could play at 1B/DH that might not be a terrible outcome assuming we have other options for middle infield. Even worse for Hall since he is depending on his fielding to make it.

Just focusing on Henderson, he has 7 errors in the games between June 11 through June 18.

Of the 12 errors overall, 6 are throwing and 6 are fielding.

Not saying that to say there's a big issue. He's young enough and inexperienced enough that I don't see any cause for alarm at this point. He's a very good athlete with a good arm.

Thanks to OP for the detailed information.

I agree no reason to push the panic button.  Errors at SS are very common in low A.   But he will need to improve.
