John Sickels' O's Top 20

BTW, I'm fine with him liking Erbe as I knew from the start that I had a minority opinion of Erbe's ceiling.

Yes, you do seem to be out there on a limb on that one. Here's my system: when you rank someone much lower than everyone else does, I assume you are wrong. When you rank someone much higher than everyone else does, I assume you are right. It's completely illogical but it keeps me happy.

The one other guy who BA, BBHQ and Sickels all like far more than you is Mickolio. I've seen Mickolio pitch, and your assessment makes a lot more sense to me than theirs does. But I'm praying they are correct and you (and I) are wrong.

Nobody has mentioned it, so I'll peel it out and hammer it home:

Drafting early has helped that, but willingness to actually spend money on good players (Wieters, Arrrieta, Matusz) is a key factor that some other early-drafting teams have missed.

If we're gonna stink, we might as well stink smartly...

We need to continue to draft best overall talent and pay for it. We don't have the luxury of a pretty next for FA birds to migrate to (even if we are Orioles...)

Frobby,

Now that the Reds and the Blue Jays top 20 have been done, where do we stand now?

Brewers 1 B+, 5 B, 2 B-, 9 C+, 3 C ------Top 10 2.83, Top 20 2.53

Our top 10 is still tied for 3rd out of 13 teams rated so far. The top 20 is tied for 5th. I'm not sure which of the systems not rated yet are highly regarded but I know Texas is, and I believe Oakland has reloaded nicely over the last 18 months.

Oakland and Texas are the clear top two. Florida's good. SF has gotten a lot better. There may be another team or two (STL?), but those are the big contenders I think.

That is before Oakland dealt off a bunch of guys in the Holliday trade. I think they are still up there, but I haven't seen much in their organization that makes me think they are top 5 at the moment, top 10 maybe.

TEX is deep though, no doubt there, they hang on to their young talent, kinda like the Dodgers AL.

The guys they dealt away, though, generally haven't cut into their prospect group (surprisingly). With the exception of Carlos Gonzalez, the moved a lot of young talent that no longer qualified as "prospects". I'm only a third of the way through my organizational reviews but OAK is currently still number 2 behind TEX, in my opinion.

So they tied us for 3rd-best top 10 so far, but they got there in a very different way. We have an A, 3 B+, 1 B and 4 B-. We're very heavy on our top 4 and peter out quickly after that. Oakland just keeps going and going. Their top 20 is tied for the best of the 14 teams Sickels has rated, with Atlanta the other team.

REALLY? Man, I must be more down on some of their guys then, I think they have a few that legit have a chance to be good, but some of their others look like they are going to plateau. I mean, they are deep, but I don't think they have the talent at the top, I see a lot of AAAA players in their future.

The key is depth. They don't have many huge superstars-in-the-making (though Cahill and Anderson are a big deal) but they'll have a ton of guys on BA's top 100.

They have nine on Minor League Ball's community list, and that's without too much ballot-stuffing.

Depth? All that matters is your top. Most prospects that make it are at the top.

    • Didn't see today's game in it's entirety but I will say this.  I feel 100% more confident with Mateo playing second and turning  a DP rather than JH right now.  JH will be fine there.  In time.   But even forgetting his hitting, D wise he just isn't there yet.   And yes I know the metrics say he is fine.  But to me, using the eye test, he looked very shaky fielding and throwing,
    • I like Kevin.  He is constantly improving.  My only beef is that he doesn't seem to understand that a foul ball isn't always out of play.   A ball can be hit foul, but still be in the field of play.
    • My preferred day 3 WR would have been Troy Franklin, but he apparently had a bad combine on positional drills (which might have been because he had the flu.)  And he got picked by Denver pretty early.   Devontez Walker is kind of intriguing.  He's 6'2", barely.   A bit on the skinny side but ran in the mid-4.3s.  His route tree is pretty limited, mostly short quickouts/slants and go/post routes. But he's really good at the deep routes.  Sort of a discount DK.  He's reported to have good hands and good deep ball tracking ability as well.  We have to see how that translates in the pro game.
    • Adley looks way more energized and McCann is veteran catcher who is good defensively and handles the pitchers well.  Doesn't really make sense to wear Adley out when the O's are using him at the top of the lineup.
    • Just seems like a more controlled swing from the right side, shorter, flatter.
    • He was signed in the Covid year when they only had a 5 round draft, which is why he was undrafted.  Was showing promise bur tore his UCL in 2022.  Pitched a little last year, this is his first full year back.  Nice to see the good outing.
    • What's up with Brandon Young? Out of nowhere (#30 prospect above... undrafted?) he goes 3 IP with 0 hits or walks, and 7 Ks, throwing an otherworldly 26 of 31 pitches for strikes, in Bowie's game today.
