Some Intriguing prospects up for Rule 5 grabs (in my opinion):

Astros:

C Yainer Diaz- Great offensive potential, but hasn't played above A ball.  Is #13 prospect in their system, but probably too far away from the MLB to be stashed on the roster for a full year.

C Scott Manea- Hit well at Double-A and isn't far from MLB.   Is their #18 prospect in their system.

 

Braves:

RHP Daysbel Hernandez 5'11 220 lb relief pitcher.  99 MPH fastball and good slider.   Potential closer/late inning reliever.  #28 prospect in Braves system.

 

Red Sox:

OF Gilberto Jiminez.   21 yo potential stud OF with power/speed/defense potential.  Switch hitter.  #10 overall pospect in system.  But hasn't played beyond A ball.

 

Royals:

LHP Austin Cox. #12 prospect in Royals system.  6'4 235 lb lefty with outstanding curveball.  Pitched capably in Double A.  Potential spot starter/long reliever.

 

Angels:

RHP Robinson Pina.  #20 prospect in the system. 22 y.o. 6'4 180 pitcher who made it to Double A.  Live arm with great mix of pitches.  12.2 K/9IP is very attention getting.  Could be stashed in a MLB bullpen and probably hold his own in mop-up outings, while down the road could become a capable starter.

 

Yankees:

C Josh Breaux. #20 Yankee prospect.  A sound defensive catcher with pop.  Held his own against Double A last year.

OF Brandon Lockridge.  24 yr old Outfielder who can fly.  Lightning speed with some pop in the bat.  Played at Double A.

 

A's:

RHP Brady Feigl.  #23 prospect. Good 4 pitch mix with starter potential and solid fastball.  9.5K/9IP. 25 yrs old pitched at Double A capably.

 

Pirates:

RHP Tahnaj Thomas. #13 prospect.  22 yo pitcher. 6'4 190 with blazing fastball that can hit triple digits.  Only pitched at single A.  Maybe could be stashed in a pen.

Of this bunch, I'd take Robinson Pena (best combination of ceiling, potential, close to majors) or Austin Cox who doesn't have the same ceiling, but is capable and has the bonus of being left handed.

Manea fills a need but basically having two rookie catchers may not be Elias’ idea of a fun year.  Not sure we need more outfielders so pitching is probably where we go.  Curious to see if we cut anyone else from the 40 man before the Rule 5 draft now that we made 7 additions today.

The write-up on Jimenez is enticing.  Also love the idea of pilfering a top prospect from the Red Sox.

Would love to get two open spots and take the Red Sox OF and the SP/RP from the Angels. We’re pretty familiar with the arms in the Angels system. We might lose some low ceiling guys but then pick up two high ceiling players that we can draft and stash for 2023+.

It's the Orioles they might take three Rule 5 selections. Pina is intriguing if he can cut down his BB9 rate from 5.3 last season.

A catcher doesn’t seem like a bad idea. By the time AR is deemed “ready” then there will be an idea of what a rule 5 guy can bring and if he’s worth keeping.

Considering we don’t have any catchers at all right now, I think drafting a catcher To back up our opening day starter is a splendid idea.

To you and all the rest, we DON'T need a C in the Rule V. What we need is a CHEAP FA, grisled old veteran like Caleb Joseph (but not NOW, not at his age...) to help teach Adley the ropes of being a ML C.

Austin Cox looks like a left-handed Tyler Wells.  A starter out of AA that would fit well in the pen for a year until they determine his long term future.   No quite as tall but has pitched well at  AA.  He didn't pitch a lot of innings last year (63) because he had Covid early in the year.  He was the AA Central pitcher of the Week in August.  My only caution is what happen to him in  late August/ Sept and why did KC not protect him?

Some interesting guys there, though I can't imagine Mike would take a catcher.

Last year before the Rule 5 draft, I read a lot of articles that detailed the best prospects available. I don't think Sceroler or Wells were even mentioned. It's very unpredictable. This year, I think I'll just wait and see who Mike takes and then look them up.

That’s what I do.   Though we did take Martin in 2018, and he was at the top of the MLB.com list.
