Rosenthal: O's pushing hard for Looper, Redding

First of all, we should be pushing for Sheets.

Secondly, if you sign these guys for 1 year, that's ok...They are terrible but 1 year is fine.

AM is rushing this...For once, he is rushing instead of waiting...There will be pitchers like this available all offseason...guys you will be able to sign for 1 year...these guys are the guys that will be hit by the economy.

Looper wants more than 1 year...If AM gives it to him, he is a fool.

2 years wouldn't be that bad. He could profile as a back end starter if Tillman, Arrieta and Matusz are doing good in 2010.

Looper is looking for multiple years I believe.

As I said earlier, if you were going to go this route, why not just keep DCab?

If he can get multiple years, good for him. Let someone else sign him. A 1 year deal wouldn't be bad for him. I'd also see if Pavano would be interested in a 1 yr deal with the idea that he could get a better long term deal if he has a good season. Sign one of the Japanese pitchers, and dangle Scott for a starter if Tex is signed.

Who is left on the market that you would actually want to sign to serve as a cornerstone of the rotation?

I dont mind getting Looper and Redding.

Sheets and Kawakami should be the target...And if you are afraid to sign them, I would trade for a guy with one year left(like Marquis) or present 1 year offers to several guys...the first 2 to accept get the job.

Giving any of these guys more than 1 year is terrible.

I hope they go for someone like Brad Penny for the same reason. Sign him to a one year deal, have him establish himself and then next year some other club can long term him while we let the kids play.

If you keep buying off the junk heap, in the end you keep wasting money that could have been put towards somebody like a Sheets.

Bingo.

Stop being afraid of Sheets and his injury history.

The only reason he is attainable is because he is a risk..otherwise he would dwarf the Burnett contract.

Why should Kawakami, at 33 years old, be a target? I would like the Orioles to sign him but I am just playing devil's advocate.

How do you know we have offered more than a one-year contract to both Looper and Redding? We could be doing exactly what you want us to do.

The article states that the Orioles are reluctant to go more than 1 year.

Good post. We need pitchers. Lots of pitchers.

I agree as well.

I know we aren't talking about Cy Young potential here, but the young guns need more time. I think Looper is decent. Redding is a 4 or 5 spot guy, as is D-Cab, but off the top of my head, I think he has a bit more control, which as we know is needed in Camden.

    • Another MLB player, once a teammate and friend of Ohtani, maybe tied to gambling. I didn't bother to try to understand the exact timeline or tie to Ohtani, which seems to be just as friends, but here it is for anyone interested. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/40166891/angels-david-fletcher-bet-bookie
    • Not for someone who has money riding on him winning the award.
    • Well, now that we’ve established the hitting sucks, is it a good time to complain that this pitching is obviously over performing and will crash and burn any day now?
    • The bullpen has much more depth this year than last year but it just feels like you don’t know who will be the guy each night.  Last year it was get to the 8th and you knew it was Cano and Bautista and lights out.  This year it doesn’t seem to be set roles especially with Kimberly strugggles and out as clasper for now possibly.  I also think Hyde gets a lot of grief about how he handles the bullpen but I think he has been great at looking at the game situation and with who he wants facing what guys.  Cano might come in the 6th one night then close the next, same with Webb or even Coulumbe.  I know a lot of it is analytics but as a group they make a plan and seem to stick with it instead of some managers that have 7 inning guy an 8th inning guy and closer and don’t deviate much.
    • On the replay you can see that Julio was lightly jogging after the ball-- either assuming the RF would get it, or assuming Hays wouldn't run. Good on Hays for taking advantage and turning it into a double.
    • I think in general people are more negative in life not just in sports and they need to blame someone or something.  In previous years we had a scapegoat in Peter and John.  Elias didn’t go out and make a trade it was because he didn’t have the money to go get anyone or the owner didn’t want to spend.  Now for the most part people seem to think new ownership will give the ok to spend more so now if we don’t do it it is on Elias, Sig, and Hyde for not getting best out of the players.  We dint make a big trade last year and most people just went with well John is cheap we don’t do what they want now it will fall on Elias more then last year in peoples eyes imo.
