That could definitely be an interesting option. If we’re giving out any type of long term contract, I’d probably rather take that chance on the younger guy though.

Look at the market there really isn’t anybody out there. DeGrom is the most worth it

Elias doesn't strike me as the guy who will chase the popular names with big money contracts. IMO, he's going to chase a higher class of Jordan Lyles, Spenser Watkins, Austin Voth, Tyler Wells....guys they believe in based on numbers and analytics they don't share with the public.

I think the board here will be underwhelmed during the winter, just like they were with Jordan Lyles. But Elias has things he  believes in. We'll see. I really like the approach. I hope it works. And my unconfirmed conspiracy is that Elias took Phillips66 believing he had Mullins traded to the Marlins for a big time starter and it fell thru at the last minute.

I'm not sure we see the 7/250 type contracts dished out.

But maybe we can sign some quality veteran SP's who are already well into their 30's for some 2/40 and 3/60 type deals.  I'm struggling to think of any examples off the top of my head but I feel like they've been more common over the last several years.

Looking at pending free agents: Chris Sale, The Ageless Charlie Morton (if the Braves don't pick up his 20 million dollar option), Corey Kluber, and Jose Quintana might fit that mold.

I was jazzed about the quotes.  @interloper- you seem excited too and I share that.  We have lots of skeptics on the board and I understand why, but this just feels different.  Elias has done everything he said he would do since he took the job.  This organization may be in the best shape it’s been, too to bottom, since the late 70’s/early 80’s.  I mean it.  It’s a “system” and not dysfunctional, siloed, “pieces” that lack strategy and cohesion.  I’m pumped - for ‘22 and beyond!

I'd love to go hard on 2 Padres FAs: Joe Musgrove and Sean Manaea

Musgrove is just bonafide good now, but he likely gets overpayed. Manaea coming off a meh year could be a good value option, plus benefit from the new cavernous LF.  10 expected HRs at Camden versus the 18 he's given up.

Musgrove just signed an extension

Sorry to be lazy, but where do you find the stats on expected HRs for pitchers in a given stadium?

I love the moves Elias has made so far, he's earned my trust. I think it was a no brainer trading Mancini and Lopez. Haven't seen this posted about Povich, one of the prospects gotten from Lopez, Elias says:

"We’ve got a tremendous bullpen and a deep bullpen and guys that can step in. And if we’re able to get four pitching prospects, particularly Cade Povich is somebody that we’re very, very high on internally, and think we’ve got a possible front-of-the-rotation starter and a guy that’s going to be in the mid-minors here before the end of the year..."

Go to any player page on baseballsavant.com and scroll towards the bottom of the page and you’ll see it.

If you look at his stats Quintana looks like a Cashner clone statistically. His season this year was way out of line with the typical. I sure hope this isn’t what Elias means.

I think they were high in Kevin Smith too.  Came to the organization and was ranked 12th.

Is Povich any different than Lowther?  Lowther was dominant in the low minors too.

    • It takes Orioles rookies 60 or 70 at bats to get their first two hits.
    • Tell me how can Harbaugh help him when he doesn't know how to help himself. Harbs is the worst at burning timeouts stupidly then not having any when they are needed at crunch time.
    • Yes the same here. They are going to the playoffs and yet I have no feeling towards it whatsoever. Weird feeling. Like you just know they are going to get bounced in the first round. It looks inevitable. I mean you could make a case the Tigers are more deserving of the Orioles spot. They are playing some great baseball of late.
    • Man Baltimore sports has not been kind. The Orioles are on a  3 month tailspin and the Ravens did what they do best and blew another double digit 4th quarter lead to a inferior team.  Let's see if the Orioles can right the ship,  though I'm not holding my breath on that one at all. Yikes.
    • Idk how impactful this was, probably pretty low on the list of problems, but this is the 2nd straight week that Lamar threw the ball late in the game and the receiver was unable to get oob.  The ball to Bateman is probably excusable because we had more time on the clock and we needed the deep ball to be in position to make a run, but this time throwing a 12 yard dump to Andrews was just straight up stupid IMO.  I get that they're going to play outside leverage all day every day in this situation but just throw it away and try to take another shot.  Lamar has to have more clock awareness than that,  and Harbaugh has to instill in him the importance of saving those seconds on the clock.
    • Sorry but that response from Fuller sounds to me like too many words, concepts, abstractions, and if that's how he communicates, wordy and convoluted, it's a lot for hitters to carry "into the box." Not to mention all the specifics involved, re. what pitches and locations to look for, all the analytics of how to do the swing and torque the body, etc. I'm no coach but I can imagine a whole season of this approach just becomes information overload. Maybe it's not rocket science, after all (with all due respect to ex-NASA Sig). Maybe the antidote is more Zen: just see the pitch and hit the dang thing.  BTW I think the analytical, overthinking approach is better suited to the pitching side, where you can plan your attack based on all the data. Hitting is more reaction, no time to think. You can't beat pitching using the same approach--rather, need the opposite approach, to counter with instinct and intuition. At least, that's my cheap (2 cents) advice!
    • The proposition that every auction automatically results in an overpay is simplified indeed.  Granted, "kind of true" is a low bar to clear, but still...
