“First Name” players

I’ve noticed that Adley Rutschman is frequently just referred to as “Adley” around here.   That got me to thinking of what other Orioles players were frequently referred to by only their first name.   Obviously, it helps if the player (1) has a somewhat unusual first name, and/or (2) is a great player.

Brooks

Frank

Boog

Eddie

Cal

Brady

Raffy

Manny

Adley

I think that’s about the list.  I think if I referred to Nick, Adam, JJ, BJ or Trey, most folks wouid know who I meant, but they weren’t mentioned as often just by their first names.

I guess technically Boog wasn’t a first name, but it may as well have been.

Anyone I didn’t mention?

Agreed. Henderson doesn't quite do it.

Yeah, if Colton Cowser had a lousier last name he might be an option too, but Cowser is a pretty solid name so I would expect most people to refer to him by that name. Likewise with Jackson Holliday.

Grayson may be a first name guy though.

A lot of GRod, so I don’t see that one.

Apart from accomplishments, for talking about Orioles on the board, I try for Dow Jones type labeling - whatever's fewer letters and/or is a better unique identifier.     Gunnar > Henderson, Grayson  > Rodriguez, and Adley > Rutschman are all slam dunks.

But sorry Mateo, you'll never be Jorge, even if out of those guys you produce the most WAR going forward.

Santander and Mountcastle's first names are also too generic.    Cedric v. Mullins is close...I go back and forth.

I like how you used the "s" in "Nsme", since I refer to him as Adley because I forget where to put the "s" in his last name.

Clever thread title.

I wish I could say it was clever, but it was just a typo, which I corrected before seeing your post.  Maybe I should change it back.

I’m pretty bad with hitting the s key when I mean to hit the a key.  And lots of other things when it comes to typing.

We'll see. Given the amount of pushback on GRod and the lack of support for SonGuez, I could see Grayson getting heavy play.

The first letter - first syllable nickname is an artifice of the 90s and is in decline. Not sure what his thoughts are on the matter though.
