I think they are using the so called "opener"  they did not plan to pitch him long.  Its like using a reliever before the starter.  The Rays do this more than just about any team.

When Elias took over I was hopeful the O's would follow suit.

It's a logical move to make.

Agree, it's significantly easier to find a pitcher who can get through a lineup 1-2 times, then 3. Just plan for it and build the pitching staff around it
