Trading for a rental vs a longer term asset

Jordan Montgomery, David Robertson, and Tommy Pham, are three rental vets that I think fit really well here.

I agree about Robertson. But what is Pham going to do for us? We already have Aaron Hicks for the experienced back-up/4th outfielder role once Cowser comes up. IMO Hicks is a better player and a SS who can play CF.

I totally disagree about Jordan Montgomery. If we are going to go the LH, half a season, rental route; I would MUCH prefer Eduardo Rodriguez.

I don't see Cease costing that much to be honest. He has looked very mediocre this year and does not go deeper into games, which makes last year look a flash in the pan scenario.

I know that some posters/people tried to label me as the president of the Dylan Cease fan club, but to be honest I wouldn't even want him now. He hasn't been very good this year.

Dylan Cease has a 2.20 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 42 Ks in 28 IPed over the last 30 days. You and I have very different definitions of "mediocre". Also, knocking someone for not going deep into games in an era where innings eaters are a dying breed/rarity seems a bit silly. Cease would cost an arm and a leg.

Pham serves no purpose for us.

I like Pham as a lefty masher specialist that can be an upgrade over Mckenna on the playoff roster.  Pham has a career .838 OPS vs LHP.  Pham has played on some good teams too and hit in big situations all over the lineup.  Probably a "luxury" that we don't need.  But if we're talking about rentals that fit...

I would MUCH RATHER have Eduardo Rodriguez than Jordan Montgomery. It’s not even close like AT ALL. Especially given their season’s this year. Rodriguez was pitching like a Cy Young pre-injury.

Of course, all of this assumes that we are going the rental route.

I’m sensing a bit of recency bias?

The wouldn’t call it that. But feel free if you like. I have watched both pitch on multiple occasions this year and one is not like the other.

Again, Eduardo was pitching like a Cy Young candidate before his injury. Who knows what he will look like now? But if he is ANYWHERE CLOSE to that same guy, he solves the O’s rotation issues for this year. If you don’t believe me or haven’t really watched him or paid close attention to what he was doing, just check out the numbers he was putting up.

You are putting a lot of stock in what he did over 67 innings this year.  I was at the game where he had a no-hitter against us into the 7th inning, so I know how good he can be.  I also know that he hasn’t been that consistent in his career.  He now hasn’t pitched in a month and he had two very mediocre outings in May shortly before going on the IL, so expecting him to come back and pitch at peak performance like he was doing earlier this year is expecting an awful lot.

Hopefully he finishes his rehab and rejoins the team sooner rather than later to give our scouts/front office personnel enough time to evaluate where he is post-injury.

I acknowledge that he has only showed flashes in the past and has never been as good as he was looking this season. But I see some upside in making that kind of calculated risk and that might be closer thing that we get to a frontline starter, if the Marlins are not going to sell.

What I don’t want is another mid to back rotation guy who is more of what we have. We need someone to line up credibly in a game 1/7 situations if we want to have a real chance.

He hadn’t even thrown a minor league rehab game yet.  I’d say there’s no way he pitches in a major league game until sometime after the all star break.

The deadline I believe is August 1 this year. He should have enough time to make what 3 starts or so by the deadline?
