Giolito went for the #65 overall prospect (according to MLB.com) and a pitcher who's been described as having mid-rotation upside. Robertson went for two prospects who were 20th+ best in the Marlins system. The Dodgers get two starters for a non-Top 100 prospect.

Am I reading this right that teams aren't getting back a ton of value for veteran pitchers thus far?

Exactly… I think Sig’s influence is huge .. I am more of the idea that they are not going to make any deal of more weight than the Fuji deal and maybe zero

Too rich for me.  Westburg and Kjerstad for a guy with one good year?  Nope.

The guys on The Fan said they'd do that trade all day long.. lol.. Apparently they have some euphemism for prospects that has a negative connotation.

Now that the Mets have crossed the Rubicon with the David Robertson sell off, I am just staring at Age 40 Verlander and Age 38 Scherzer.

I know Max is a Union guy, but both guys are to the point in their careers the marginal millions have lower value.    They are Hall of Fame pitchers where the watered down regular season can't offer them much they don't already have.     Any October could be their last.

I don't imagine they have much commitment to the '24 Mets, Cohen gets near 2-for-1 savings on any dollars he sheds, and he can just reload with Snell, Urias, Giolito, maybe Ohtani.

I think Elias will make some deals, but I think he's not going to move more than 1 of our Top 100 prospects.

You have to believe that the O's could have gotten Giolito for Norby+ given what the Angels gave up. That tells me Elias isn't shipping out a Top 100 prospect for a rental.

Yeah, I hear ya.  They are just prospects after all and we are going to [very likely] give some up.  That's fine but you still have to get a good return for them.  One top guy for Cease, I'd consider, but not two.

Which is strong belief of Mejdal.. that rentals are always ridiculous value overpays that never work and that only draft and system enable winners

Sometimes they work - Sabathia, Johnson, and even Doyle Alexander.  I am sure the Cubs would trade for Chapman again.

You have to think that the Mets would ship both of them out for next to nothing in return for any team willing to eat a big chunk of their salary. If the O's really want to upgrade their staff for a WS run this year without giving up the farm (literally) then this is an option.

And short of a (now impossible) Ohtani trade, its hard to imagine any move(s) that would excite O's fans (and the baseball world in general) more than acquiring one or both of the Mets $43M starters.

Of course - given the O's history this is just a fantasy (until it isn't).

And that's the problem I have with the deal it's bit much unless Cease is going to pitch like he did last season and 2022 might have been his career year rather than something repeatable.

Cease is a good pitcher, but I'd rather get someone like Jordan Montgomery at a lower prospect cost.

As the Mets don't seem to care about salary, it would actually behoove them to eat a lot of it themselves for a better return.

    • I don’t think he’s trading those guys for a RP even if he’s controlled. I could see them adding a legit bat or a SP that’s controllable.
    • 2022 Aberdeen - .221/.298/421.    31.8% K rate  7.7% BB rate 2023 Bowie - .251/.320/.456.         24.9% K rate  8.3% BB rate 2024 Norfolk - .296/.396/.486.       19.3% K rate  12.2% BB rate
    • I’m going to preface this by saying (1) I expect to get crushed for bringing it up and (2) it shouldn’t impact trade deadline strategy.     I think Felix is going to pitch in the playoffs. There is nothing I have to go on other than gut feeling, in fact Elias has clearly stated otherwise. But I think that is what he is shooting for. I bring it up only on the premise of having a guy in the bullpen who could miss bats.  They could have him be a situational guy and leave Kimbrel where he is for this season.
    • For Norfolk, Cook has started 29 games at 1B with a .996 fpct. and 5 games each at LF, CF, RF.   He started one game at 3B and made an error and at lower levels played a decent amount of 2B.   I think he’s probably an emergency/last resort guy at 2B/3B and @Tony-OH seems skeptical of his outfield defense in general.  Saying all that, with a LH heavy hitting OF he has a decent shot as soon as next year, especially if Norby gets moved.  Norby, with the ability to play LF/RF/2B would probably be his chief competitor for a backup role.  Also depends on what they do with Hays.
    • Your definition of what we need and @Bemorewins definiton of what we need may be different.    Getting a #3 starter he feels confident as a game #3 starter in the playoffs.   Who, in his mind, is that pitcher?   Fedde will not require one of those guys.  Crochet might.
    • We do not have to give up Holliday, Basallo, or Mayo to get what we need.
    • So you think Elias will give up one of the top 3 prospects to get upgrades?
