To be fair, Wells was rest for I believe 9 days during the All-star break and came out his first start against the Dodgers looking terrible. And he has been terrible in his starts since.

With Wells talent/pitch arsenal, there is a really thin margin for him to be successful. 

By the way, even if he was to regain his form, his home run rate allowed was pretty much terrible (amongst the worse in the league in the first half), he is not a pitcher you want in your bullpen (especially in the postseason) given his penchant to throw home runs at an incredibly high rate. That's almost setting up a recipe for disaster. 

I am saying all of this as someone who really likes Wells.

Yeah, O's will count on Irvin pitching 3 or 4 innings and he won't make it thru 1 inning.

Not sure why anyone thinks that being a rental would be a deal breaker for Elias. 

To me it seems much more likely that he deals for several rentals than breaking the prospect bank open for pitchers with years of control left. There's just not much of anything available right now that isn't a rental other than Verlander (who everyone wishes was a rental instead)

Rentals are priced accordingly. All else equal, you'll have to give up much more prospect capital for a player with team control remaining.

If you think he's too stingy to give up good prospects for a rental, then why would you expect him to pay the premium for players with years of control?
