Bryan Baker Optioned

Bit of a surprise as I think most thought it would be Krehbiel, but even in mop-up duty Krehbiel looked much better than Baker has in months.

Baker has been one of the bigger disappointments this season.  He has electric stuff at times but I was ready to throw my phone at the TV the other day when he got ahead 0-2 on some chump (IKF?) and then couldn't put him away.

Why would you make this move today and go into tonight's game one reliever down rather than just make the move tomorrow morning?

I was wondering the same thing, maybe they think it’s better to not even have the option of pitching Baker tonight.

Yeah this doesn't make sense unless Krehbiel has no more options.

I never thought of Baker as the lowest man on the totem pole.

Baker's problem is that he fools around with too many pitch types.   He should be a two or three pitch pitcher.   He always seems like he needs to throw every different pitch to each hitter.

EDIT: Of course, this could a catcher issue, too.

Maybe they will have Flaherty in the bullpen tonight and Irvin start tomorrow?

That's thw only reason I can think of that they'd make this move tonight instead of tomorrow.

Agreed and what really sucks is he was so good to begin the season.

Or just Flaherty is in town, and they want to dress him so he can hang out with the guys in the dugout, and the letter of the law requires a move like this.

Everyone is rested after yesterday but I see you’re point.  If you’re up by 10 tonight or down by 10, you could have got a few final innings from him.  Doesn’t bother me at all though.  Everyone that can’t be counted on to help close out tough games needs to make room for someone who can.

This is very surprising to me. I'm more of a Baker supporter than most, but the guy has the capability to strike guys out in high leverage situations. I'd prefer him in the 'pen over the likes of Irvin, Krebiel, or Perez at this point.

Perez has no options remaining. Irvin only has one.

Flaherty is on the team and has to be put on the roster. Who else should go?
