Jackson Holliday spring training watch

From what I understand, the “professional” autograph seekers wore him out. He apparently caught wind of the amount of cards he signed in person that were being sold online by these people, and so he started to shut it down.

That sounds legit.  There were people sitting with books of cards.  We got tickets right against the rail on the 1B side just so my kids could interact with the players.  At the end of the game, everyone rushes forward and cuts off the kids.  There has to be a better way...

(And I wasn't meaning to sound like Holliday isn't a good guy or trying to do right in his 'role model' position.)

With how messed up the autograph/memorabilia market is, if I were in Jackson or Adley's shoes I'd only do selfies with fans and nothing else.

In 2001 in Cal's last ever game at Fenway, I was waiting next to the dugout and he stayed a good while and signed for fans after the game. As I recall, I was wearing my O's windbreaker, thought that I was pretty visible as a fan, and was ready to hand him my ball when he stopped. It was foul ball he hit my way the year before that I saved. He stopped signing literally right before me. I figured that since I was a grown man of almost 40 at the time, he assumed I was a card dealer. Oh well.

On the drive home, we stopped at the State Theater in Fairfax VA to see a Ray Davies solo performance and I reached in my jacket for the same ball to see if Ray would sign after the show, and doggone it, he stopped right before me.

So my assumption from that weekend onward is that folks like bartenders, etc,. whose attention I'm trying to get, is that I'm The Invisible Man.

Seeing that bomb off of a left hander has me giddy with excitement. I had originally thought that Jackson might start the year in Norfolk, but if he can hit lefties like that, I don't know how you can keep him down. He might actually start with the team on opening day. Especially if it gives the Orioles a rookie of the year opportunity. But with that said, this was one left handed pitcher and one home run. I don't even know anything else about the pitcher who threw it. So what will happen? It's up in the air. (No pun intended).

The pitcher was Yusei Kikuchi. I remember the O's owned him in 2022, but he was much improved in 2023.

Don’t know if it’s been mentioned.  First pitch fastball, swing and miss.  2nd pitch fast ball fouled back.   Kikuchi went to the well one time too many on the third pitch.   Food for thought for those who say you keep throwing it until the hitter proves he can catch up to it.   Holliday adjusted and caught up to it.

Sure but it is Spring Training.  Why not see if he can catch up to it?

Just saying that’s why a lot of pitchers will go to something different on the third pitch even though he beat Holliday on the first two.   There’s no right or wrong  answer.   The pitcher has to guess if the hitter is adjusting.    Henderson got caught looking at 3 straight fastballs to start the game.  Have to assume he was looking for the slider at 0-1 and definitely  0-2.

Didn't Elias proclaim this off-season that Holliday would be given an opportunity to prove he belongs on the Opening Day roster?   Looks to me like he's meeting and possibly exceeding   his burden of proof so far this spring.   I'm hoping Elias is true to his word.  I'd like to see our best players on the field from game one.

This kid is unreal! I have NEVER (in all my 40 years) have looked forward to a Baltimore Orioles season as much this. Man, I hope they win it all.

A lot of players now insist on personalizing the card or ball they are signing for you for free in person. Unless it’s at an event like a card show or signing event where you are paying for their signature. That’s a different story.

So at the game, they will ask you what your name is, sign the item, but also write “To: James” or whatever on it, so that it has little to no resale value.

“Um, my name is Buyer. It’s, uh… Swiss?”

Don’t get too giddy.  He struck out on three straight breaking pitches from the same lefty in his next at-bat.
