O's Acquire OF Peyton Burdick

RH 4th/5th OF with options is a good fit right now with McKenna out of options.

Burdick’s whiff looks so bad he may not be a better hitter than McKenna even with the additional power, so a lot depends on defense and if the Orioles are even looking to use a bench spot (in addition to Mateo) on this type. But having options is very valuable, and the “power, walks, defense and bad hit tool” is clearly a profile the Orioles like and think they can do something with. He’s got a good chance to stick on the 40-man past Opening Day and be optioned to AAA.

Hopefully somebody among Burdick, Fabian, Haskin, and Cook ultimately emerges as an improvement on McKenna (or at least McKenna 2.0 with options) as that RH all-3-OF-positions complimentary bench piece for all of our lefty OF in the pipeline, although Fabian may be the only plus defender in CF and he’s got a long ways to go.

Not near as fast as McKenna.   27 years old.   Probably AAA fodder. Options are nice but he probably would not hold his own in the majors if Mullins went down.

Mateo has a better chance of backing up CF.   Cowser should be a better 4th OF for the corners.

I am rooting for Ryan McKenna this may mean a shot at a bigger role on some other Club, though Roster Resource has McKenna/Burdick next to each other 4th and 5th on the depth chart.     The AAA depth chart.

Happy birthday, Ryan!

Burdick will also turn 27 this month like McKenna today, and probably one or both will be on the bench AAA opening night.

I personally prefer McKenna to his entire slate of competition: Hilliard, Burdick, Johnson, and Mateo.

But it's hard to not see how the Orioles are protecting themselves in case they have to make the decision to DFA him and he gets claimed. I don't think they know if they will make that move yet, but they're gameplanning for it just in case.

I agree and hope these mostly just minor league depth moves instead of being a replacement for McKenna as backup outfielder.

McKenna has the classic AAAA player problem.  He's not quite good enough to keep in MLB all year,  but once out of options he's stuck.   I really think his time with the Os is very limited,  likely cut/traded in spring training or soon after the season starts.   If he had options it'd be a different story.
