De Leon had an excellent outing last night: 5.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 8 K’s.  He got through 5.2 innings in 65 pitches, 43 strikes.   The unearned run came when two batters reached on consecutive errors (one by De Leon) in the 6th inning, so really he could have gotten through 6 IP in less than 65 pitches but for some poor defense in his final inning of work.  

In 16.1 innings, he’s posted a 1.65 ERA, 0.86 WHIP, 12.7 K/9, 2.8 K/BB.  That’s a very solid April for De Leon, who was promoted to Delmarva in mid-July last year and threw 26.1 innings to a 2.39 ERA then.   Looks like he’ll be a strong candidate to move up to Aberdeen soon. The O’s probably would like to see some more outings of 5+ innings before making that move.

Nice to see some of these guys getting through five innings in the lower levels, building up innings so there will be less restrictions as they age through the system (barring injury of course). Really excited to see the fruits of the international program on the pitching side in particular. Hopefully it leads to our versions of Framber Valdez and the other Astros who have backfilled their rotation in recent years.

I especially like to see a guy getting through 5.2 on 65 pitches.   I feel like you see so many guys in the lower levels with pitch counts in the mid-80’s to get through 5 IP.

He really was using his changeup down and away well against righties and the slider was a tough read for the lefties. 

His fastball command is still not great but he was sitting mid-90 with it and they don't barrel him up much. He did throw 43 of his 65 for strikes and even though he had a season high 8 Ks, he did more on strike looking (13) then misses (9). He had his sink on his fastball working as he got 8 GBs vs 4 FBs and no line drives.

He gets a decent amount of chase with Low-A hitters so I'd like to see him challenged with High-A hitters. 

Like Frobby said, if not for a drop by his first baseman he would have gone a career high 6 IP.

An immaculate 1st inning.  3 strikeouts on 9 pitches.  Also looked dominant in the 2nd with three more.  2 players reached because of shoddy defense.  Stopped watching and somehow they touched him up for 3 in the third.

He gave up a couple seeing eye singles, but also allowed the first home run of his professional career, a two-run shot. Then went back to striking guys out and getting ground balls.

Hit 96 MPH and had a real nice change going at time.

He was taken out after 67 pitches (70 seems like the Low-A pitch count so far), striking out 10 and left a runner on 1st that didn't score.

I'd really like to see them extend his pitch count some and challenge him against High-A ball hitters.

If De Leon stays healthy he could be on top 100 lists as soon as midseason. Right now, he’s got a 2.08 xFIP and 2.20 FIP in 21 IP, with 33/5 K/BB. He checks every box - age, build/projectability, velo, 3 pitches, swing and miss stuff, lefty, ground balls, and now throwing strikes and a low walk rate. Wouldn’t be surprised to see the Orioles bump him up a level soon. 

Being a lefty with a power sinker is a fantastic fit for OPACY as well. That’s going to make him very tough on lefties and should keep the ball in the yard against them, and if he struggles more with righties given the platoon splits on the sinker he has LF to take advantage of.

With Weston’s promotion to Bowie this week, it seems like someone should be moving up to Aberdeen soon.

Think of him as Cionel Perez but with a changeup. Oh, and he's much taller so that fastball can play up even more than Cionel's at times.

That’s exactly the profile I was thinking when you described him. If Cionel Perez was 6’3” and could maintain that same velo as a SP, and had a changeup for RH batters. Hopefully De Leon’s command is ultimately better than Perez’s, but Perez is pretty good evidence of how that profile can be successful even with pretty poor command.

Tony, do you have any idea what type of extension he gets to the plate? Average? Elite?

      Yes and at one point was a higher rated prospect in their system than Aaron Judge. It took awhile with the bat but he was always an amazing athlete with the ability for defensive wizardry.

      I was listening to MLB Prospects podcast last week. They talked about Gillen, and mentioned a lot about how he may be the best high school hitter. However, it’s a tough call where he’ll go because of a weak arm. They said the arm was injured, a right labrum, and his arm strength is not back after two years. So, probably wasn’t going to be a SS anyway when said and done due to size, maybe a 2B/LF or CF profile due to the weak arm and 60 speed. He was projected to maybe become the top high school player in the draft as a sophomore, but injured the shoulder and had some other injuries that have held him back. It is going to be interesting to see where Elias goes with picks 22 and 32. I would like to see Gillen there, but I think he’ll be gone. Kellon Lindsey is interesting, and maybe Billy Amick, along with one of the previous college hitters you mentioned will sneak through. Lindsey is rising fast.

      A good friend of mine coaches college baseball.  He’s studied and dedicated his career to understanding how humans move. Not all humans move the same way.  An incredible talent could potentially be taught to move against his body’s preference and fail.  New wave progressive coaches understand how various body types work and the nuance to teach/coach them effectively.

      I'm still trying to figure out how this guy is out of the majors for 7 years and somehow manages to pick up 2 MPH on his fastball, at the age of 34.  But hey, I'm not complaining.   Statcast loves him so far this year.  Statcast thought he was a little unlucky in his last stint in the majors, and unsurprisingly they think he's getting a little lucky now, but even accounting for his good luck he's still in great pitcher territory.
