Anthony Santander 2024

I would really like to have Santander back next year but not at the expense of signing someone like Burnes.  We need TOR pitching and I would prefer giving that money to Burnes and backfilling Santander with Kjerstad vs keeping Santander and trading Kjerstad for a pitcher.

If new ownership says we can have both then by all means but I have a hard time seeing that happen.

Agreed, the difference between, say, Snell (plus Santander's draft pick) and Povich is a much bigger delta than Santander (with no pick) vs Kjerstad. Spend the money where it's needed.

WHY IS 5+ YEARS FOR Burnes so much favored over 5 for AS? A great pitcher (now) with obvious diminishing peripherals and with a lot of mileage on that arm. And you ain't getting Burnes for 20 mil per year--more like 35 to 40 and probably for more than 5 years.

For me it's because 1) elite arms win in the postseason, 2) the offense is positioned to be very good with or without Santander, but the rotation is not as well positioned to be good without Burnes.

Because we have a pipeline of talented, MLB ready, hitting prospects, whereas we have very few on the pitching side.

You’ll take credit for the best Teddy KGB line in Rounders?

No of course not.   That is why I originally used that phrase.   Because it is so iconic from that movie.   I am saying in reference to AS I started the trend.

It’s amazing to me that Santander has passed Ken Singleton and Eddie Murray for most home runs in a season by an Orioles switch hitter.   He’s also only one behind Eddie for most games hitting a homer from each side of the plate as an Oriole, even though Eddie had 5,000 more plate appearances as an Oriole. Santander is up to 14th on the O’s all time homer list (147), with a good chance to pass Chris Hoiles (151) and at least some chance of catching Melvin Mora (158).

Santander could get hot again and have an outside chance of hitting 50 HR.

Here’s nice article on Santander’s role as a mentor to Eloy Jiménez and other teammates.   His comments on conditioning are interesting:

“I would say [to Jimenez], ‘Hey, you have a really good bat and we’re gonna need you at some point because you’ve done it before and you know you can hit for power. I just feel like your body, it needs to be in a good position to be able to go out there and compete.’ So he’s doing a really good job of doing that, having a good routine, make sure he’s prepared his body, and I’m so happy for him. He has done really good for us.”

Santander has spoken up in the past with the newcomers joining the team. He doesn’t force his opinions on anyone but is available for consultation. The more receptive that the player is, the more that Santander will share.

“I would say I talk to my teammates a lot, especially the younger guys,” he said. “I know they’re young and there’s a lot of energy, but this is a tough game and you need to prepare your body so you don’t wait to get hurt. I talk to the guys individually. Gunn, Colton (Cowser), that he needed to get stronger, Grayson (Rodriguez), that he needed to lift weights. Their bodies need to be strong to be able to stay healthy for a full season.”

Number 40 for Tony Taters last night.  He’s only the 8th switch hitter ever to do that, joining Mickey Mantle (4 times), Lance Berkman (twice), Chipper Jones, Mark Teixeira, Carlos Beltran, Todd Hundley and Ken Caminiti.

He also joins a pretty exclusive club of Orioles who reached 40 homers: Chris Davis (twice), Brady Anderson, Frank Robinson, Mark Trumbo, Jim Gentile, Rafael Palmeiro and Nelson Cruz.

Here’s a nice article on Santander that somehow escaped being posted when it came out two weeks ago: https://www.mlb.com/news/anthony-santander-2024-breakout-season
