At least at that point in the play there are two outs so it makes a bit more sense to try and get in scoring was position. I didn't see the play but on paper the worst part must have been sending Mullins with 1 out.

Problem is that the Orioles have been terrible for the last 30 games. We haven’t lost very many in the win column, but the play is bad, and no mistake.

The Orioles have been bad (or no where as good as they should have been) ever since this site started a MAGIC NUMBER thread. You just don't do that at the end of June to The Baseball God! 😄 Will we ever learn?????

This is true. Which makes it even more incredible that they're in first place in the AL. As much as they've sucked the last month, no other team has been able to overtake them. If anything, that makes me more optimistic, but maybe I'm just an idiot.

It is somewhat amazing to me as a fan and a long time member here how quickly we have become spoiled.  But it also speaks to the incredible level the Orioles have played at since Adley came up.  

Though unquestionably this is the worst stretch for Adley and Co.

They were not very good in Sept 2022 but I guess it was a bit different because everyone was just happy to finish above .500 and we never were really in serious playoff contention.

And are tied for the best record in the AL. I know it's hard being a fan sometimes, but you need to have some perspective about things.

The Dodgers won 104 games very recently. They also lost 16  of 17 games in one stretch.I'm not comparing the two situations, but I will say, every team goes through struggles, and hopefully we will add some depth to the pitching and try a new lineup next week. A lineup that will include Coby Mayo. And others on the mound. Maybe that will change things. I hope I'm right.

I think you’re right that even very good teams have periods where they struggle.  I think we as fans have forgotten this in light of last year’s team that never got swept in a series and really never had a period of play as bad as the last couple of weeks have been.   Beyond the results, this team has just been playing uncharacteristically sloppy baseball for several weeks, even when they win, Thursday’s game being a textbook example of this.  Hopefully the team gets its act together soon, because this hasn’t been pretty.

      I assume he’ll get plenty of opportunity to go through the adjustment period next April.  Right now, there are 20 games left in the season and we’re trying to win a pennant race. We’re not really in a position to give charity at-bats to a kid who has done nothing but hurt us at the ML level at bat and in the field.  I’m a big fan of Coby and I have high hopes for him. But I think our fans have been in “build for the future” mode for so long that we’re understandably but probably excessively fixated on developing the kids. Maximizing Mayo’s development at the expense of winning games — and the other 25 guys on the roster — just isn’t where we are at the moment. If he could at least field, that would be one thing. If he had even shown some signs of it clicking at the plate, you could probably justify it. But he just looks lost. Striking out half the time, and not even hitting the ball that hard. They’re already sticking with Jackson as an absolute black hole in the lineup, which I’m sure makes it even harder to talk themselves into forcing Mayo out there too.

      That is certainly an argument.  But that would be like saying you have the #1 Farm system so keep doing the exact same thing.  It doesn't work like that.  I think many people are shorting how unlikely it has been to hit on so many prospects in a big way.  All have not, and to be honest Holiday Mayo and Basallo still have more to prove as does Kjerstad.   But the Orioles have had a huge hit list in 5 years.  Yes many were high picks.  But many names that went around our guys are not here.  With the obvious exception of Witt.  All of that said I do agree with you that he has so far not prioritized pitching.  I do not agree that automatically means that continues forever.  It has been a choice and with the possible exception of this year...it's been a pretty good one.

      I think he’s perfectly comfortable with TB being forced to go with their LH relievers.  For lefties, they have Lovelady, Cleavinger, and Mason Montgomery. We’ve seen Lovelady a few times, and he’s nothing special at all. He’s also pitched in 2 of their last 3, so that could be an issue. Montgomery has pitched one ML inning, after posting a 6.26 ERA in AAA. I doubt they’re scared of him, either.  Cleavinger has been a solid pitcher, but even he has a 3.84 FIP. And they can only use him once — so using him against those 3 LHHs would mean they can’t use him to put us in the O’Hearn dilemma. On the other hand, even without Fairbanks, they still have Kelly (3.03 ERA), Uceta (0.79 ERA), Rodriguez (2.79 ERA), and Bigge (0.84 ERA) as the righties out of the pen. I would think we win (big time) if they’re using those bum lefties to try to match up instead of throwing those RHP killers.

      Totally fair. How is he expected to start adjusting by playing every 5th day.    in fairness a vast majority of those at bats were in his first call up. He went 1 for 2 in his first game back and was promptly benched for 3 games.

      Witt had -18 DRS -12 OAA year 1, -6 DRS +14 OAA year 2, this year both DRS and OAA like him. Gunnar has 23 errors this year, but he only had 14 last year.  So idk.  He's in a fielding slump for sure.  In 2023 he had +13 DRS +1 OAA.  This year he's at +4 DRS 0 OAA.

      Bingo!! If Westurg, Urias and Mateo weren't hurt he wouldn't be. Holiday is the lucky one. At least he seems somewhat comfortable at 2nd, though his arm seems lackluster.
