I'm not making excuses for Burnes on a night were he gives up 8 runs.   If hitting the ball where you wanted was so easy, players would have hit .800 against the shift.

This wasn't the shift. This was Holliday vacating his position and Wong executing a great inside-out swing to hit to the now vacated area where Holliday was at the start of the play.

And to the larger point, the whole thing was a play executed by the Sox dugout. The fact Burnes wound up giving up 8 runs isn't particularly relevant, considering had Holliday ignored Devers "attempt", they may well have been out of the inning with the game tied at 4.

That’s the sort of AB from Colton that’s going to have Hyde looking awfully hard at that #15 on the lineup card in future big spots against lefty relievers.

His prodigious talent as a hitter notwithstanding, the knock on Cowser has always been he's a high strikeout guy, I think particularly on offspeed stuff.  He's been pretty good at leadoff so far but for now he's going to have nights where he just doesn't look good.

I'm saying you act like a hitter can choose to hit a ball coming at them at 98 mph thru a hole in the infield defense.  If it's so easy to hit in the majors, batting averages would be average .700 instead of .250.   No doubt that's what he wanted to do, but he was just as likely to pop the ball up or hit a weak grounder.   Yeah no doubt a mistake on Holliday's part, but it's not Holliday's fault he hung ball over the plate for a 3 run HR.
