Why would the O's do this? Ray should have negative contract value at this point.
There was also that "pitch the f***ing ball Robbie" incident with Hyde. I kinda doubt he's on our shopping list.
Is Robbie Ray this years Chris Sale. The Braves made the move for often injured but talented Sale last offseason many people thought was a big gamble but it worked perfectly. It is definitely high risk high reward type decision. I am still more looking at Mountcastle for Jordan Montgomery as a better option.
I don't know what to make of Hoffman's implosion at the end of the season. Injury? Can't handle the juice of the playoffs? We have a pretty packed bullpen. I don't know whether the additional money of a Hoffman contract is really worth it over keeping Soto. If they like what they are seeing from Bautista, I could imagine them staying put with the bullpen as is.
Similarly, Pivetta does not seem like enough of an upgrade over our back end options. We don't want to trade McDermott and see him get unlocked into the next Arrieta by some other organization.
I really can't begin to guess what Elias's strategy is going to be this time around. We are "good" pretty much up and down the 26 man roster with no major holes (except backup C) and some depth in the minors. Yet, we really have only one "great" player.
Based on the Burnes trade, my guess is Elias might see the value of an ace type starter and go for someone better than Pivetta while letting the bullpen ride for now assuming Bautista is healthy. I'd be pretty ecstatic with something like Snell/Crochet along with Grandal and O'Neil.
