What did DT do wrong tonight?

As per the norm, I disagree with him batting Mora 5th. Slightly disagree with him batting Huff 4th. I'd do something like this:

1. Roberts - SH

2. Markakis - LH

3. Jones - RH

4. Scott - LH

5. Reimold - RH

6. Huff - LH

7. Wieters - SH

8. Mora - RH

9. Andino - RH

I agree with the call too.

Bergy was up in the zone in the 8th inning and there were some LOUD outs. With 2 lefties coming up in the 9th, I'll take Sherrill.

This is basically what Trembley said in the post-game interview. My reaction remains the same....Bergensen should have been given the opportunity to finish the game. As a couple others have suggested, he should have gone out for the 9th and if a runner got on, then you pull him for Sherrill.

Agreed. :)

CGs and saves are just counting stats. If he brought Sherrill in just because its a save situation then I don't agree with that. And to leave a pitcher in too long just to bag a CG is also wrong IMO.

If he leaves the starter in too long and we lose then that would be questioned. If Sherrill gets lit up and blows the "save" then the move seems even more wrong. And that doesnt make much sense either.

I think the truth is this was just a very minor move that if repeated 100 times it wouldnt make much difference one way or another. Any ML pitcher should be able to protect a 3 run lead in the 9th but sometimes they don't.

Me too -- those last two outs were shaky and he got behind on the first hitter in the inning, too. Let him go out on a good note.

  • 2 weeks later...

Bump.

As I said in the game thread, the decision not to PH for Bergesen is understandable. I probably would have done the same. But pitching to Ryan Howard in that situation is inexcusable. I'm curious to see how he explains his reasoning in the postgame.....although I don't think anything he says will change my mind about what a terrible call he made there.

It is far from "inexcusable". If you walk him, you've walked the winning run into scoring position and then you can lose to a seeing eye single.

As vtech said in another thread, Howard is not Barry Bonds. He was much more likely to strikeout then he was to hit a three run bomb.

Sometimes players make plays. It happens.

We're playing under Little-League rules now? Seven-inning baseball?

    • Starting point has changed.  Given the fact he has approx 1/7th of his season in the books at 1.139, to OPS just .780 for the season, he'd have to drop off to under .730 the rest of the way.  That sort of drop off wouldn't be acceptable to me. I'd like him to OPS .800 the rest of the way for roughly .850 for the season.  The more they use him in a platoon role, the better I think that number might be.
    • Can I ask how you timed it vs the DVR?  Did you use a stopwatch or count click with pause/FF, or something else?
    • I can’t fathom why anyone would want a Tanner Scott return. In 10 innings, he is 0-4 with a 1.78 whip. He was maddening before, and now he’s older. But I wonder if the Red Sox would part with Justin Slaten? He’s been pretty outstanding. Yeah, only 8 innings, but we hired Yohan Ramirez, and he’s been a catastrophe in 10. Yes, I know he’s a rule 5, and the Bosox are in the East. And their pitching is pretty thin, too. But they know they aren’t going anywhere in this division, and they might think getting a good return for a Free Rule 5 guy might be worthwhile.
    • This draft unfolded weirdly.  First with the *nix guys getting taken early and then how no defensive players got taken all draft, and then a bunch of teams reaching for OTs.  I'm pretty happy with how the draft unfolded because I think we got a player that I expected to be gone by the teens or early 20s.  I don't know what we're doing with our OL but hopefully we can maybe trade up from 62 to pick someone up.
    • I have it on dvr and I timed it four times. I got 10.75, 10.80, 10.74, and 10.78.
    • This is exactly what EDC said tonight
    • My guess is more of a safety profile than they preferred. They clearly wanted Wiggins. They ran that pick up fast. And then when you listen to the press conference, the love for the player was obvious.
