6/6: Red Sox at O's

No it's not. He's mixing all four pitches pretty well. He's definitely using the fastball to set up some off-speed stuff, but I disagree.

He threw 23 fastballs out of his total of 31 pitches in this inning. That seems about normal for the average pitcher, but most people don't have the command of their offspeed pitches like the way Matusz does. Just seems to me like he should be mixing it up a little bit more.

He threw only fastballs to Cameron and also Beltre I believe.

Cant' see if Sherry's crew is sitting behind the tarps. Just looked at the radar and the rain should be in the area shortly.

That's why I'm watching the game instead of gardening, like I told myself I was going to do today.

A few more Boston runs and I'll be out there regardless of the weather. :(

Ground crew looks ready. They just showed them lining up behind the tarp....

His command is spotty at best. Matusz is a guy who is supposed to pitch on the corners and below the waist. He is doing neither with any regularity. He is still throwing some outstanding pitches but he is throwing a ton of waste pitches because they aren't close.

I've seen him throw a few great change ups and a few that were awful location-wise. I've seen him thrown a few great sliders and a few that were awful location-wise. I'm not sure where he has put his curve. He threw a couple good ones to Pedroia and none to anyone else that I've seen.

His fastball command is just not where it needs to be. He also appears to be melting on the mound. This guy is built to be pitch efficient and he just isn't being pitch efficient right now.

Great evaluation Bruce. Tough to argue with that or elaborate further. Good stuff!

I'm not saying the ump is wrong...getting those calls is something Matusz will have to earn.

Agree completely - young pitchers normally don't get those calls. Will be interesting to see if Strasburg does however. MLB can say what they want about umpires, but they are only human.

    • Wasn't a huge fan of his swing for that last out today but coming in to pinch hit with 2 outs isn't easy.
    • Interpreting Malike's comment that way is theoretically possible, but I didn't take it that way--didn't feel that shade was being thrown on me at all. But thanks for the concern.
    • People are being a bit ridiculous with the holier than thou takes criticizing a little humor. I am not saying what happened couldn’t cause a significant concussion, but it would be a bit of a fluke if it did. Mullins barely hit him with the bat and he had a helmet on. The fact that it was in the back of the head did make him more vulnerable, but this wasn’t the type of thing you see and think he was lucky to be alive.  Guys have probably hit their heads harder on the top of the dugout or on the fence making catches.  And note this comes from someone whose son has suffered severe concussions and who is well aware of the dangers associated with them. In short, people need to lighten up a bit on guys like Roy.  It was a little gallows humor.
    • Yeah, you read that wrong. LA2 is one of my favorite posters here and he knows it. No harm, no foul. If you aren't familiar with the game threads, it doesn't matter what the team is doing, people complain about it and people did make that same joke in the game thread long before Roy said it here. Game thread in summary - when the O's are not doing well, it's insufferable, when they are doing well, it's mildly less insufferable. There, that wasn't hard. I'd appreciate it if you didn't assume I'm throwing shade at people. I'll leave that up to you to do, you're really good at it.
    • Comp a. Like Gunnar, and beavers…
    • Wasn't Westburg a 2nd round draft pick?  It's a little early to judge last year's draft.
    • Before Elias.  They generally haven’t missed on a 1st round or 1st round comp pick with the position players.   I trust they’ll make a good decision at #22 and #32.   Their track record in rounds 2-4, particularly on college position players and specifically the last three drafts is suspect.
