Indians Designated Derek Lowe For Assignment http://bit.ly/RaI5iT #mlb

Worth a look.

He's got an ERA of 5.52, his WHIP is the highest of his career (1.689), and he's gotten thrashed in his last 3 outings. In fact, the last really good start that he had was on June 1st ..... 11 starts ago. He's not worth a look. Are we going to get a new thread for every crappy player that gets released ? For somebody that is so critical of Peter Angelos for being a lousy owner, you sure have pretty low standards yourself on how to improve the team.

Absolutely worth a look. FIP of 4.48 and a fWAR of 1.1 on the year. Compare this to Tommy Hunter's 5.68 and -.2 fWAR, and Gonzo's 5.69 -.2 fWAR.

I mean, he's no Jake Arrieta, with a 4.04 FIP and a 1.5 fWAR, but he could help hold things together.

This just shows you how worthless stats can be. Arrieta who EARNED a trip to the minors has better #'s then Gonzo. You can't take one or two stats and make a rational decision about a player. There is so much more to it.

I'm interested. Looking at his game logs, he has thrown 12 quality starts in 21 tries and has failed to go five innings only four times. He has been really hammered six times (22 IP, 42 ER) but the rest of the time he's been pretty good (97 IP, 31 ER). Frankly, at this point I'd take a starter who gives you a good start two out of every three times and gets crushed the other time. He still competes better than some of our guys.

I think that based on what we are getting from some of the young guys, he would be worth a flier as no worse than the long guy that we seem to need. This is a cut Gregg scenario IMO. No point keeping Gregg around if he is not going to help this team IMO.

Give him the same deal as Moyer. 3 starts in Norfolk and if we like what we see, we bring him up.

What on earth do we possibly have to lose from that situation? Considering Tommy freaking Hunter and Kevin Gregg are both currently on our 25 man roster, we have plenty of room should he show us something.

Ha you just beat me to it. Was saying pretty much the exact same thing about Gregg. Make Hunter the longman and cut Gregg and let Lowe be the 5th starter. Why not?

I am beginning to believe that Kevin Gregg is un-cuttable. I haven't decided if he has performed some sort of advanced voodoo or hynosis on the people in the front office, or if he has secret pictures of Peter Angelos in a ballgown doing the lambada with Jerry Sandusky.

But it has to be something.

Are you going to keep using different font sizes and alternate colors for every line-up thread you do??

If someone gets DFA'd, of course people are going to ask if he is worth a look. Other people may have different opinions of the player that is being discussed. Dont be a D-bag and ask if were going to start a thread about every player. Chances are there is going to be a thread.

8 of those starts came before June 2. All 4 in the last 2 months have been of the 3 R in 6 IP variety (except one 6 2/3 outing). He's given up 21 runs in his last 11 1/3 IP. Also, hes been worth -2.2 rWAR the last 2 years. I'd rather take our chances with what we've got.

Also, he's missing no bats. 41 K & 45 BB in 119 IP.

    • Everything revolves around the health of the player. I think Gunnar has more. I think the collision with Mateo set Gunnar back and affected him in ways we will never know. I'm no mind specialist but Gunnar is young plays all out, and that had to bother him. I've watched that collision a number of times. No fault - just two players going all out and one is finished for the year. It just so happened that Gunnar got the yips and his batting went south soon thereafter. Maybe a coincidence but I think we will see a rejuvenated Gunnar next year and all stops are off.
    • I’m not so sure the bolded part is true. I think a lot of that last bit can have to do with small skills: situational hitting/running, above average play in close games, generally things that can be boiled down to “luck.” I didn’t see this years team as having a major talent discrepancy from the 2023 version.
    • As great as Gunnar is can’t assume he matches last year. That said I like the odds of the team as a whole matching what we did.
    • The real improvement of this team will come from within.    The 3-5 players they bring in from outside the org will supplement the roster…maybe put it over the top but the real improvement will come from those already in the org.
    • Yeah. -Would love to keep Burnes but I seriously doubt it. -I have a lot of faith in Adley.  - Holliday has huge ceiling even if he isn’t ready to be elite.  - doesn’t always work this way but the better your closer is tends to help rest of pen
    • Nice OP. Thanks for the effort. Like the chart. Surprised it hasn't received much response. You sum up a lot of what I hope for as well. I'd add: I think a full - healty year of Westy will be even more valuable. I think Gunnar has even more in the tank. I want - hope that Holliday can develop into the lead off hitter and OBP table setter we need. And, I so want Cowser to cut down on strike outs and continue to develop as a professional hitter. I think he has the potential to cover for the loss of Santander while Big K develops on the right side. A lot to hope for but I believe these youngsters have a lot of potential yet to tap. And oh yes - I want Mayo to make Roy and all of us proud! Thanks again for the effort! I look at pitching as if we have a base. I agree with your points 1 and 2.
    • Postgame Pedro Martinez and Dusty Baker critiquing Clase tripling up on his weaker pitch before the Carpenter heroics. 78% cutters on the season for Clase - the key PA went cutter-cutter-cutter-slider-slider-slider.
